Easier to Run....

Posted by jay on August 28, 2004, at 19:20:20

"If I could change I would take back the pain I would
Retrace every wrong move that I made I would
If I could stand up and take the blame I would
If I could take all the shame to the grave I would
If I could change I would take back the pain I would
Retrace every wrong move that I made I would
If I could stand up and take the blame I would
I would take all my shame to the grave"

Linkin Park "Easier to Run"
I bought this album (Linkin Park "Meteora") this past week while "away" on a small vacation up North with my Dad. Well, I am 34, and I LOVE this disc. For anyone who has ever had mental health issues, it is a wonderful, cathartic album that makes you feel SO much less alone in this world. Yes....anger and sadness all bottled up. The haunting synths...the crunching guitars....the passionate vocals. This line(s) above is/are perfect
for me, because I feel if I could just "make it all right", man, I would! Lose the pain..the fatigue...the weight of all of this "invisible load".

Yes...."..I would.."

Jay,
"I would" too. I am SO glad to hear from someone who feels the same way about that cd. I bought it when it first came out and it hasn't left my car cd player since.
A friend of mine, who isn't a fan of hard music, was in my car one day when I had it on. She asked why I liked it so much. I responded "because it sounds like I feel." That was the first time it occurred to me, but it's true.
Some of lyrics to their songs could have come straight out of my own mind. It definitely helped me during some of the most difficult times I have ever had. The song that you quoted, hearing that song felt like someone took everything I have been feeling and expressed it for me.
I'm 32, by the way.

Close...kinda..heh...I was in Midland/Penetang area. The smell of the fresh 100 percent clean water/air off of Georgian Bay...the 'white caps'.. was....oh....just as close to what I imagine what "Heaven" (and I am not religious..) would be.

And thank you so kindly by the way..:-) You help me...I help you..we all really seem to help each other too, keep some sort of perspective in the middle of this awful Hurricane of the Soul.

Peace and Hope...

Hi CG...*yes*..this disc goes places many others don't. You are *so* right...it does "sound how I feel". It is so 'dynamic'....it has so many layers to it. It pulls up and stirs so many feelings in me. I am very happy (for lack of a better term..heh..) that this disc touches someone else in the same way....as I imagined it did, but it's nice to see it "for real". "Numb" is the first track that I heard that just knocked me on my butt..this was when it came out about a year ago or so. I had burn't a copy of the cd from the internet, but lost it soon...and for some reason, it has stuck in the back of my mind for such a long time. I wanted to have the actual cd instead of some cheap download...and I saw the video for "Breaking the Habit" in my hotel room, and said "AHHHH..gotta get it..NOW!!"

Anyhow...any other fav's off the disc...any other bands or artists you are into? I listen to mostly modern alt/rock music, but like some older rock bands too.

Take care...
Jay

Jay,

I have to tell you that you are the only other person I know that relates/connects to the cd the way I do. I know other people that like it, but they don't *get* it.

Let's see...other favorites. Well, I really like Faint, Nobody's Listening, Lying From You. I *love* the entire cd, really. I never get tired of it.

Do you have Hybrid Theory, their first cd? It's great also. I think that their music is so different and fresh--rap but still alternative, angry but with intelligence, melodic but still hard.

I listen mostly to alternative also, we have two local radio stations in town that both play alternative. The thing I hate the most is that they rarely tell you the names of the bands they are playing!

My musical tastes have matured so much. In high school, it was all hair bands and metal. Now I can get into rap and some lighter stuff as well. Let's see if I can remember what's in my car cd player right now...Linkin Park (of course), Jay Z, Los Lonely Boys, Foo Fighers (another great band), John Mayer, and Ashlee Simpson. It runs the gamut! Do you still respect me? ;)

So what else are you listening to? Do you like KoRn? I have been tempted to buy their latest cd but I wasn't sure if I would like the whole thing.

Ok, I have rambled long enough.

Hey...no prob! Yes, music is really an indicator, a barometer in some ways, of how I feel and such.
I take music pretty seriously...and it's great to find someone with mental health concerns (nice way of putting it...eh?..heheee) who gets as much, ummm, 'passion' as they can out of music.:-)

If I had more money..I would certainly buy many, many, MANY more cd's. I really like Tool, yes Korn, a bit of Mettalica (I didn't spell that right..heh.). I am also in love with a great new album from a Canadian band called 'The Tea Party'..the disc is called 'Seven Circles'. It is a wonderful mesh of modern hard rock and melody.I *will* check out Hybrid Theory. I like some of the other interesting mixes of rap/rock out there too...the Beastie Boy's come to mind. I also like Faith No More, Rage Against The Machine (now Audioslave), Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains (RIP Layne)...so many bands from the 90's.

On the other hand, I like really mellow stuff like Sarah McLachlan, as you had mentioned John Mayer also. Dave Matthews get's me feeling nice and relaxed. I like some 'classic alt' too like Depeche Mode, New Order..stuff like that, as well as some 'classic rock' (just a bit of it) such as Led Zepplin and Rush. There is just *way* too much to list, but like you, I really take the music and try to fit it into my life...and it becomes the 'soundtrack to your life' in other words.

Sorry I took so long to reply...I have had a rough few days, as I ran out of one of my main meds...leaving me feeling horrid. See......you don't 'ramble' at all. :-) Of course I still respect you..heh....musical taste should be as unlimited as possible.

Oh ya...do you have broadband or regular dial-up? The reason I ask..is maybe we could trade some music? There are some really good, cool modern alt/rock bands from here in Canada, and I could easily post some MP3's on the web for ya!

Anyhow...please let me know....and take good care.

Best to you...
Jay

Hi Jay!
First of all, I have to say that I hate this little posting window. Why can't it be larger? ;)

Now that I have that off my chest, sorry it has taken me so long to reply. TS Gaston hit the area where I live yesterday and it was pure chaos. Some areas got 10+ inches of rain. The city itself was (and is) a disaster area. There were cars completely covered with water; cars, trucks, 18-wheelers floating down the street. Cars ended up in piles when the water finally subsided. Major interstates were closed and it took people 3,4, 6+ hours to make a commute that is normally 30-45 minutes. People lost electricity and water.

The good thing about it was that some friends of mine called me last night to check on me, knowing that I have had panic attacks when I get stuck in traffic. Luckily, I was off of work yesterday and didn't have to drive in all that mess.

Much more than you wanted to know, I am sure!

On to music. If I had more money, I would be less selective and more experimental when buying cd's--like the Korn one. So you like them? Maybe I will give the cd a try. I think the song I've been hearing is "Falling Away From Me."

I used to listen to Rush, I've seen them in concert too...years ago. They are very talented. I like Metallica and Alice in Chains. I like the Rage stuff I've heard on the radio. I've seen the Dave Matthews Band in concert too, they are very popular here. Did you hear about their trouble in Illinois?

I tried to find sample clips of The Tea Party on Amazon, but for whatever reason the clips would not play.

And to answer your question, I am still using regular dial-up and I am unwise to the ways of the MP3. I know, it's like I'm in the stone age!

So anyway, you said you were feeling horrid, are you doing better now? Do you ever use babblemail?

Uh oh, I'm getting long-winded again... :)

Take care of yourself!
CG

Hi CG....see..Dr. Bob is right there for every concern, eh?..heheeh

I am actually going to turn on my babblemail...I for some reason never got around to it. Do you have it on?..I forgot to check to see.

Wow..the musical connections! That is something else, and you know, as you said before, music can really help you find some kind of 'voice' when you are experiencing tough times.

A few really neat things....I just saw Rush last week in Toronto (I am a Canuck, eh..:-). An increadible show, you are right! That's really the only 'older' music I still really like.
Have you heard of the Canadian band 'Our Lady Peace'? I think they had a few hit tunes in the U.S. The Tea Party is Canadian as well...and that sucks you couldn't get a sample of them. Well, what I will do is put up a few of their songs on the web, and you can try listening to them..let me know what you think. It's great music I *know* would be a major hit in the U.S. if it had the proper backing. Oh ya...and what happened with the Dave Matthews Band?

Any other artists or bands you really love you care to share? I am always looking for new music to scrape up. There is of course some great American stuff that sadly never reaches our airwaves up here.

I work in the social work field, and was actually thinking of getting into Music Therapy awhile back...but graduate college is very expensive, so I have to save up a few more 'pennies' before I decide if I want to continue on.

Well, I am gonna turn on this babblemail thingy, and maybe we can chat more that way.

Thanks....talk to you soon.. :-)

Let's see if I can remember what's in my car cd player right now...Linkin Park (of course), Jay Z, Los Lonely Boys, Foo Fighers (another great band), John Mayer, and Ashlee Simpson. It runs the gamut! Do you still respect me? ;)

I've seen the Dave Matthews Band in concert too, they are very popular here. Did you hear about their trouble in Illinois?

Jay,
I sent you a test babblemail, let me know if you get it.

Also, I saw your other post--hugs for you (((jay)))

Take care of yourself,
