Car Crash Feeling Depressed

Posted by ginger C on November 1, 2003, at 17:12:15

I haven't been able to be on line much lately I totaled my car on the 28th and have been feeling pretty depressed about it. I looked in the rearview mirror and when I looked back the car in front of me had stopped I tailended her. The police acted as though I had committed some kind of horrible crime and kept shouting at me. It got worse after he found out I had a mental illness and was on medication for it> He kept snapping at me and demanding to know if I was supposed to drive on it. To make matters worse I had been going through a downswing and had called my doctor just the day before and she had increased my Lexapro dose to 20mg. I sure am feeling low at this point if anyone out there has any comments I would be glad to hear them.

Your situation was an accident and nasty treatment by the law enforcement person was uncalled for. It's understandable for you to be upset. These unfortunate things happen in life and I hope you get to feeling better about it. Do you have someone to vent to... good friend, therapist, whatever? When life situations set me back, I find venting and time, sometimes well placed med tweeking, helps. Sorry for your low "tide" and I hope soon you'll feel a bit better.

I'm sorry that happened to you. :( That was uncalled for.

Vent away. It really does help.

I hope you feel better soon.

The key is to take care of yourself, do you have a therapist? If so, step up your visits so you don't develop PTSD, you were definitely traumatized. In all probability your insurance will deal with the other party's insurance and you'll receive a letter when it's over. The primary thing is your physical and mental health and you need to everything you can to take care of it.

Wow! The exact same thing (sort of) happened to me a few months ago. I was pulling out of a parking lot, and I was glancing to the left to see if there were any cars coming. I had thought that the car in front of me already pulled out, but then I heard this crunching noise, and I thought that I had hit the curb. I looked forward and realized that I had smashed into her (very nice) SUV. I did not total my car, but I needed to have the hood and fender and light repaired, some painting, some other stuff. It brought me way down for several weeks, not to mention ruined my good driving recond. I'm waiting to see what my insurance will spike up to when January comes.

Sorry that you have to go through this. I know how much it sucks.

I'm sorry to hear this happened to you. Just being in an accident is upsetting enough without the cops being nasty to boot. As the others said, vent away!

Did you happen to get the name of the officer? It should also be on your copy of the polic report, right? At some point you could write a letter to his supervisor about his unprofressional behavior. He has to do his job - get the info and all, but he has no business being nasty and demeaning and verbally abusive while he's doing it!

I haven't been able to respond for several days because I've been busy looking for another car. The insurance company totaled mine. I could not get with my therapist because she was out of town but I set up an appointment for next week. The officer who was such a snot did not know that A: My husband is a veterinarian and does the work on the horses for the mounted patrol and B: We are also good friends with one of the captains whom I went to with my complaint. Captain Dodd is going to look into it.
I was bruised pretty bad in the wreck and my left knee hit the dash and popped out of place for a minute. My bladder was bruised so I was passing blood every time I urinated and felt like I had to go every 5 minutes.
I am beginning to feel a little less depressed but I have an appointment with my psychiatrist tomorrow. I don't know if she will increase anything or not she may be afraid I'll get manic if she increases the Lexapro any more.
Thanks for all the feedback and caring messages guys and gals.

Dude,it sounds like you're right on top of this. That kind of bump happens all the time.. here's a story about a friend...
he was driving down a hill in town, the sun was in his eyes, so he *took off his glasses* to put on his prescription sunspecs.
In the interim, someone in a van pulled out in front and ... bifter*!@&*!
He's pretty silly, you were just unlucky.
take care,
S

Thanks for the message now I don't feel so alone during this time. It's nice to know that someone else has made a mistake by taking their eyes off the road in front of them. I appreciate all of the concern you guys have shown I am beginning to feel much better.
