Poll of the Day - standard Sofa or Sofa Bed!!!

Posted by NikkiT2 on November 25, 2002, at 11:42:09

OK.. I'm buying a new sofa!!! Found one I like very much, and if I order before 5pm wednesday I get 40% off... which means we could afford the sofa bed version of it!

But the dillema here is.. are sofa beds as sturdy as a day to day sofa as a standard one is!!

As a bed it owuld be used, maybe, once every 4 months... and we have a futon already for guests.

My mum (who is paying for said sofa!) says get the sofa bed, but i don't want a sofa that will fall apart in 5 years time!!

Anyone got any ideas or experience??

Oh, the dillemas of modern living!! *lol*

Sofa beds are generally more uncomfortable (full of yucky springs) than regular sofas. They are also uncomfortable as beds. If you needed the extra bed, it would be worth it. But three times a year, when you already have a futon, which I find way more comfortable?

Them's my two cents.

I hate sofa beds, if you have to move yourself, you'll curse the day you bought it.
Some are coming with better mattresses but most still suck.
I'd stick company on the futon.
How long your sofa lasts depends on how much you spent, what kind of fabric or leather, and the foam density of the seating cushions.
Pets can figure in also.
Spend as much as you can afford on a sofa..you'll have it a LONG time and it's the major focal point of most rooms. In general, spend as much as you can afford on all furniture.

maybe that explains why my 10 yr old sofa has developed a big old butt-groove where I usually sit. not enough foam density. I tried moving to the other end, but it's not the same.

I concur, sofa-beds are crummy. They always manage to turn into torture-racks over time. futons are better, they wear out but it's not such a pain to replace them.

The ever so uncomfortable , tries to look designer made ikea sofa beds---no no --I just bought foam mattress from there..they usually last 3 years--you can forget pleasurable gymnastics--hurts the knees , anyway i digress..
SOFA.SOFA.
Unless you got &&&&&&'s and buy decent sofa/bed/futon.
Happy shopping....(I hate shopping , use the net)

I hate sofa beds. They are very uncomfortable. The older they get, the worse they are to sleep on. Phil brought up a great point on moving as well. They are extremely heavy. Going upstairs with one is horrible.

My advise is to buy the sofa. If you are saving 40%, maybe a new coffee table or the matching chair.

Nikki,
If they put sofa beds in prisons, the crime rate would drop drastically. No one deserves to have to sleep on sofa bed and in general, they're not even real comfortable to sit on.
My 2 cents.

Decided on standard sofa!!! And we can afford the 3 seater now :o) And it just fits.. and I mean *just*!!!
With the saving, it means we can get the protective coating stuff that guarantees against stains for 10 years!!! And arm covers that can be washed, and 4 matching scatter cushions!!!
I wanted to get the foot stall, but we simply don't have the room for it!!!

Thanks for the advice guys!!! This place can always be counted on eh??!!

Sofa and Air Bed

Hi Nikki,

This is what several of my coworkers do:

They have a plain sofa and one or two inflatable air beds. When guests visit, they simply put the air beds on the floor and inflate with an electric pump. Air beds are inexpensive (about USD$40 for good ones) AND they are more comfortable than sofa-beds AND they store easily when not in use.

My wife and I made the MISTAKE of getting a sofa-bed when we purchased our furnature. Now we both want to get rid of it and buy a simple sofa -- the sofa is uncomfortable AND the bed is uncomfortable. We already have the air beds which guests use. (We give them a choice, and it is unanimous in favor of the air beds).

I have a feeling that since it is mum's money, it is also mum's choice, though.

Good luck,

Ted

Nikki,

If they Scotchguard it or use another process, make sure it doesn't void the fabric warranty. Carter sofas, real nice, don't want any of their materials Scotchguarded. People usually went ahead with the protection anyway...stains-not good.
Happy you're getting the sofa. I had people take months to decide on sofas..one lady, a year. Then she ordered one from NYC. Shipping must have been a fortune.

Ted,

we also have an air bed, but no electric pump - just a foot pump, so we just stick people on the futon!!!
Oh, and mum is just handing over the money *grins* She's been giving my brothers alot of money recently and wanted to treat us!!!

Phil

Ta for all that.. twas a real help! Its the company that supply the sofa that do the protective stuff.. its not actually scotchguard.. its.. Guardsman Gold Fabric protector if that ameans naything to you!!

The company we're using has come highly reccomended.. my mother in law has one of their sofa's so we know we're getting farly good quality. And they don't have nay store rooms, so their over heads are alot lower to be able to gve good deals (so their stuff says!!) Oh, and theres a 21 day full money back, no quibbles thing... you don't even have to give a reason as to why you want to return it!!

Oh, one more question... how will we know if it will fit through the doorways?? We've measured everything so i can give th eocmpany the measurements.. do you think they'd know if it will fit?

Can you believe I've never bought a sofa before!! *l*

Give them the measurements and also let them know if it goes straight into the room or are there turns, especially near the door they use.

Being canadian I'd go with chesterfield or settee of course or even couch in a pinch. I just think it's funny how many different words there are just to describe something we place our asses on to watch tv. hehe

All you nay-sayers! I love my sofa bed...

I have a sofa bed. I actually have two sofas exactly the same, but one converts to the bed and the other doesn't.

There is no difference between the two in sitting comfort. The bed is much more comfortable than the floor (which I often hit when using an air mattress). Only one bar that is a little uncomfortable, but I fixed that with a little foam and some ingenuity! In fact, when I went through a period of not being able to sleep I slept better on the sofa bed than on my normal bed!

I got these couches from my parents, and they have been sat on, slept on (both human and animal varieties), and spilt on for the past 10 years. They also moved over 200kms with me, and the moving men had the lovely job of carry them up 3 flights of stairs.

Yes, the bed is mega heavy. That's why there are movers! I love my couches, and they still look great. A great investment on behalf of my folks!
