Posted by justyourlaugh on November 26, 2002, at 10:00:00

my family and inlaws are both pushing us to spend christmas with them.
we are not driving all over gods green earth(white)to pleae them any more.
for once in my 12 years of marriage we will stay home and enjoy our own kids.
my mom would rather believe i have a horrible thyroid problem other than me being twisted-
so i will tell her mythyroid is acting up,cant come.

it sounds like you're standing up for yourself this time. Good for you!! One should do what one wants during the holidays and your plan seems like a most important one. Enjoy the time with your kids and may your "blue" be a beautiful shade of 'sky'
good fortune

Hey jyl,

My favorite quote, "Visiting relatives is not a vacation." We *never* travel on any holidays. Aside from the stress of travel with everyone else, the problem you face begins. If we visit one family for a certain holiday, the another family "demands" our company for the next holiday and the cycle begins.

I am happy you are standing up for youself.

You go, jyl. Make your own christmas just the way you want it. Your kids will have better memories if you're enjoying yourself.

Can I go off on my own slightly related rant for a sec? I'm 40 years old, live 2000 miles from where I grew up, and it annoys me to no end when people ask if I'm going "home" for Christmas. I've started saying sweetly, "my home is here", cuz it is.

I have stamped my little feet and I refuse to move on Christmas and Boxing day!!! My husband was.. well.. swaying towards his mothers plan (going to hubbies brothers, where the in laws willbe.. but also the brothers in laws who utterly utterly do my head in!!!) until I found a seriously scrummy christmas recipe that ahs him drooling, and I told him he could only have it if we stayed home for christmas!!!! (its cheese and chestnut fritters with a cranberry sauce!!!)

We're going to my families the weekend before Christmas, when mum is lending me her car for 2 weeks (her boyfriend has one so she won't be inconvienced!), and then down to see the in laws on the Friday after Christmas!!!

We had christmas alone 3 years ago, and it was a little lonely, but, I just can't face the in laws this year... they know nothing of my "problems" and put so much pressure on me.

PLEASE SEND RECIPE! Sounds delightful!

I am currently baking yeasty-rolls, shamrock-shaped, for our family's big 14-people dinner tomorrow. I know you're in Angleterre, so here's to a happy Christmas, cuz that's the big holiday... And whoever didn't know about Boxing Day - well, what can I say? (My ex is a brit).

take care,

Wendy

Heat 2tsp Oil in a pan. Gently fry a chopped onion and 2 chopped cloves garlic for 7 mins intil soft and lightly browned. grill (broil for you guys???) 100g cashew nuts intil browning.
Put cooked onions, garlic and cshe nuts in food processor and add 2/ 240g cans whole chstnus and an egg and 4oz gated cheese such as chedder. Whizz till combined but still a little chunky!!
Stir in 2tsp Dijon Mustard and a little salt and pepper to taste.
Form into 8 rough burger shapes.
Brush with a little oil and grill for about 10 mins till browned, and repeat on other side.
Heat 4tblsp cranberry sauce and 4 tblsp of orange juice in a pan until melted.
Serve the cutlets with the sauce.

I'm dying to try it, however the kitchen we'll be in tomrrow is not mine, it me mum's (see? how's that for brit speak?), so I'll make it when I get back. Sounds absolutely scrumptious... I think you enjoy eating as much as I do!

BTW, I bet real cranberry sauce is best for this. Most people don't know how to make it, and it's so easy. So many Thanksgivings at other people's houses, they have the canned cranberry sauce (sort of like a jelly, which is fine, but not the real thing). I always make it by washing a bag of fresh cranberries, put 'em in a pan with a lot of brown sugar (to taste, some like it tart, some like it sweet), add some orange juice, and some orange zest, and let the berries boil till they've popped and turned liquid-y. Cook through, check sugar, put in a beautiful bowl with more zest on the top, and you're there. It an absolute NECESSITY to have this if you're serving turkey... (Sorry about that, vegetarians). And it spreads nicely on sandwiches made from the leftover turkey, too. Can you tell, I can't wait?

It's snowing outside, and we gotta go for a bit of a drive, so enjoy your day tomorrow, and imagine millions of Americans stuffing themselves at dinnertime. We love it...

thanks again,
(any opportunity to talk about FOOD),

Wendy
