JOHN GIORNO - HOW TO MAKE A KILLER RAT

Posted by kid_A on May 8, 2002, at 17:37:49

HOW TO MAKE A KILLER RAT

YOU'VE GOT TO
STARVE
A RAT
UNTIL HE IS
SO HUNGRY
HE'LL EAT
ANOTHER RAT

YOU PUT
3 RATS
IN A CAGE
AND STARVE THEM
FOR 9 DAYS

SOONER OR LATER
THE STRONGEST
RAT
WILL EAT THE OTHER 2

YOU MUST KEEP
THEM IN
COMPLETE
DARKNESS,
BECAUSE RATS
HAVE AN INSTINCT
NOT TO EAT
EACH OTHER
BUT IN BLACKNESS
THEY LOSE
THIS INSTINCT

ONCE A RAT
EATS ANOTHER
RAT,
HE GETS A REAL
TASTE FOR IT
OR BECOMES
ADDICTED.
IT'S ALL IN
THE BLOOD

THE BLOOD
IS THICK
AND SWEET,
AND ONCE
A RAT
TASTES IT,
WE WANTS IT
MORE THAN
ANYTHING ELSE

THIS IS
THE TIME
TO LET
THE RAT
FREE
HE WILL GO
HUNTING
OTHER RATS

HE KNOWS
WHERE
THEY LIVE
WHERE
THEY GO
TO EAT,
HE KNOWS ALL
THEIR HABITS

HE PREFERS
RATS
TO EATING
GARBAGE,
ELECTRICAL WIRING,
OR ANY OTHER
KIND OF FOOD

IF YOU ARE HAVING
A RAT PROBLEM,
FOLLOW
THESE INSTRUCTIONS

WHEN THE
KILLER RAT
HAS CLEAND OUT
ALL YOUR RATS,
HE WILL MOVE ON
TO OTHER RATS
IN OTHER PLACES

WHEN HE BREEDS
HIS OFFSPRING
WILL ALSO LIKE
TO EAT RATS

THEY GET
BIG
AND FAT
AS CATS
THEY GET BIG
AND FAT AS CATS.

The Stranglers and Stiff Little Fingers. I guess I sniff them out. (It helps to have had the most amazing poetry professors in the world, too.) Anyway, my favorite poet since I was in high school has been Frank O'Hara. I will always love him best (though I did have a Sexton era in undergraduate school).

Or how 'bout Pablo Neruda? Rainer Maria Rilke? Emily Dickinson's "Wild Nights"?

Just some of mine...

If it makes you look cool, be sure to save it for when you're drinking coffee at a coffee shop. No need to torture yourself in private. I have some newer poets here, some Mary Jo Bang, Jorie Graham, a few others. It's mostly over my head--a lot of esoteric nothing. I really like Lucille Clifton (she was our poet laureate) and Mark Strand (he was or is too), but most of the good stuff I find lately, as far as new goes, is in literary mags like the North American Review or Boston Review, etc. One poet at a time.

There is a creepy poet you might like. Ever read Terry Stokes?

Here are two little poems. If you like him, maybe you'll buy his book.

Making the Poem

& now I am so crazy I cannot
write a line without worrying,
am I fucking it up already?

& this is only the first line,
& I have watched every probing
doctor story on T.V., & I'm right

back where I began, my mother's tomb,
thumping, weeping, wiggling the little
toes of my words.

Terry Stokes

-----

Masks

The proper pills keep me
from cracking my head in the shower,
& the mess expected therein.

The Chinese child stretches her head
over the booth inThe Great Shanghai.
She does not speak as I would not speak.

I collect the scars of limited travel
on my face, a devil mask for me alone.
I squint from the eyeholes, & welcome

everyone home. Bumbling, foolish, I,
too, watch this shadow of a heart
leap from the landscape to some place

we can only know when we
dive from a dark boat out of love.

Terry Stokes

I'm surprised you found this post as I wrote it about 2 years give or take a month ago... I haven't written much in a while because things got a little heated over rules about verbage that may make people feel put down/accused as they say verbatim...

Anways, John Giorno, was the start of Andy Warhol's sleep, he dated Roy Lichtenstein around 1964 or so, when he wrote pornographic poem (you can look that one up... I would be blocked for a century by posting it)...

He started the Dial a poem system, where poets like Allen Ginsberg would phone in poems, etc.. He was really in with the beat crowd, though not a beat writer per say.

He was one of the biggest forces of introducing William S. Burroughs to the US, in a sequences of conferences called The Nova Convention.

Some of his books include

Cancer in my left ball. (true story)
Balling Buddah
You Have to Burn to Shine.

all but the last are impossible to find.

He was a huge pioneer in the art of SOUND POETRY, using effects and delays to repeat his already repeated lines in poetry.

His best work, which took me ten years to find on vinyl is a double disc w/ Anne Waldman, inclusive of the 30 minute poems "Everyone is A complete Disapointment", and "Drinking the Blood of Every Woman's P-----" censored for my block block...

THe best way to find out more about him and what he did are through these web sites:

http://www.ubuweb.com/

and

http://www.brainwashed.com/giorno/disco.html

good luck, and let me know if you need any more info, I've been reading poetry since I was around 8.
