I'm surprised you found this post as I wrote it about 2 years give or take a month ago... I haven't written much in a while because things got a little heated over rules about verbage that may make people feel put down/accused as they say verbatim...
Anways, John Giorno, was the start of Andy Warhol's sleep, he dated Roy Lichtenstein around 1964 or so, when he wrote pornographic poem (you can look that one up... I would be blocked for a century by posting it)...
He started the Dial a poem system, where poets like Allen Ginsberg would phone in poems, etc.. He was really in with the beat crowd, though not a beat writer per say.
He was one of the biggest forces of introducing William S. Burroughs to the US, in a sequences of conferences called The Nova Convention.

He was a huge pioneer in the art of SOUND POETRY, using effects and delays to repeat his already repeated lines in poetry.
His best work, which took me ten years to find on vinyl is a double disc w/ Anne Waldman, inclusive of the 30 minute poems "Everyone is A complete Disapointment", and "Drinking the Blood of Every Woman's P-----" censored for my block block...
