No, I hadn't read her work before, but it is striking. I think I'll give it a look. It's how I often get reading something - some words catch my eye & I want to know more. There's a song Sinead O'Connor does called Raglan Road. It's beautifully haunting, so I searched for the author of the lyrics, read up on him, & now want to get some of his poetry to see if his other stuff matches Raglan Road.
I have the crappiest memory for what I hear. By the time you're telling me the third in a list of things, I've forgotten the first two. But if I read it, it lasts much longer, & if I write it down, it's with me almost forever. BUT I have to be interested, otherwise in & out.
I am really good at tracking down info. Sort of an obsession with me. I'm an information freak - I can't stand not knowing something. Just this afternoon, I got thinking about why there's so many different kinds of nails. So what did I do? Had to look up on the net the reason, & read about the different sorts & what they're used for. I'll probably never need to use the knowledge but I wanted to know.

I know this is like giving away the end to a movie, but maybe I'm being a good Sam by letting you in on the English teacher's plagiarism secret: You can find any quote that anyone has ever liked by typing a few words of it (usually in quotes, if you trust the source to be a good speller and punctuator) in Google. I say "ever liked" because not everything published is on the internet, so it's often found on a site designed by someone who's a fan of the author.
Just so you know: I only answered the ones I already knew (other strings). As a writing and lit major (and now an English teacher), I have a lot of useless trivia in this unusual mind.
I hope I didn't spoil the game. At the same time, the playing field was probably not level, since many of us know this trick, and many of us don't.
Gosh. Now I know what it feels like to be a party pooper. (I am hanging my head in shame, walking home from the kickball field, kicking the dirt up with my new white Jack Purcells. Once in a while, I turn around and look at you all with this pitiful, sad puss, waiting for you to feel sorry for me and tell me to come back in play.)

Exactly! A person may have the wording a little different so that you have to figure out what the words actually are, but it's not hard. That's why I don't think I should answer unless I actually do remember it. Funny - still many people have trouble finding things on the internet??? I'm also great at finding & understanding science articles & sources, to explain in more "layman's" language for others.
C'mon back & play with us, beardy! I promise just to answer what I really do know.

I didn't peek, but damn it, though I know it - very familiar, I can't remember who. My memory's like a sieve - all the fine detail runs through just leaving the chunks behind. Okay, now I'm going to cheat but I won't post the answer. If I don't find out, I'll go crazy. Oh wait - already am.

Not really. I guess it's the results of having other's music around. I never did like them so that's why I never recognised them. Anyway, no one else allowed to kick me either! :-)
I've got unusual music taste - like Nick Cave, Social Distortion, & such, but more so classical, opera, Celtic, & international.

Yes, '70s music sure sucks a big one. B.J. Thomas wrote it, but the one I know is by Blue Suede, released in 1974 (I looked this part up). I don't watch Ally McBeal or much TV at all, so I didn't know it was being used in all these places. I might have chosen something much yuckier. The ooga chagas make this song more tolerable, don't you think?
I have a bunch of friends who are very good at playing the game: Let's Sing A Really Bad '70s Song so it Gets Stuck in [Beardedlady's] Brain and She Repeats it All Night Long Till She Can't Fall Asleep. So I've gotten quite good at naming these stinky songs.
Okay, who's next?

This is the last two stanzas of the song. Ironic that I chose it, considering my relative perkiness today!
"There's a club, and you've got to go
you could meet somebody who really loves you
so you go and you stand on your own
and you leave on your own
and you go home, and you cry
and you want to dieWhen you say it's gonna happen "now"
well, when exactly do you mean?
see I've already waited too long
and all my hope is gone."

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Billy Bragg (who happens to cover quite a few Smiths/Morrissey songs)... Also, Belle & Sebastian have released a few new songs recently; not as good as there old stuff, but decent.
That's the latest CD I've burnt (i.e. what I am currently listening to). Who else do you like?

Um yeah- lately I've been worried that that may be true!Billy Bragg
Oh my God a Billy Bragg fan! Woohoo- he's coming to NYC (I live in CT) in mid-April...a nice small venue...I am so psyched to see him. Hate getting tickets too far in advance tho...I never know how I'll be feeling and I can't waste the money. I just did that with "Cracker" a few weekends ago...
Hmm, B and S- I don't know them- who are they like?
What a dopey question I asked, really- "What else do you like?"- now that I think of it, how can you sum that up in a few sentences...I love Beck, Belly, more recently Cocteau Twins (I don't know what happened there- they are so unlike me...) Can you tell I'm going in alphabetical order? The Feelies, Lloyd Cole, Radiohead. I'm kind of a music slut. I like a lot of classical, 80's (it's mostly a nostalgia thing)...and then at dinner tonight I heard Barry White "You sexy thing" ("I believe in miracles..." and swooned.
>
I digress. I'm a-ramblin' tonight.
Take care-
Kar

Just your typical indie/modern rock octuplet from Scotland...
You seem to have an eclectic taste in music... very nice. I don't know most of the bands you listed, which is strange--I'll have to do some research now!

have to do some research now!

That's what my Billy Bragg Big Yellow Coffee Cup says in big red proletarian letters.
It was my constant companion at 97X, owned and operated by a former fatcat advertising exec, who paid us in RESTAURANT VOUCHERS and found the disagreaable, drug-soaked, rock-n-roll mentality completely wrong, unfathomable; musicians showing up stoned, incomprehensible, pilfering the promotionals, Meat Puppets staggering out the door w/ books and CDs falling out their overcoats, AT LEAST THEY SHOWED UP, but no, no thanks, no hipnitude, it was all deviance, all my undoing, as if I was somehow pulling the strings, sorry sir but I believe you're taking the "puppet" part a little too literally, it's a METAPHOR, boss, a boss metaphor ya might say, get it? and he hides in the office, scrambling through Websters, door closed, what is this shit, metaphor, met-a-phor, ...they don't teach this unamerican rhetoric in Plutocracy College, but fastforward 2 years later, when suddenly the crown of thorns morphs into a 3.5 million dollar price on his head, a diadem worth its price in poise now that, and in spite of, his unrelenting obstruction of the good, the true and the nice, aka you-know-who, the Bearded One's baffling offspring has been documented in a 4 page cover story by SPIN magazine as the only American radio station worth a shit, thanks in no small part to, c'mon now, say it loud, i'm sacked and i'm proud, by then you realize he'd long since fired my Billy Bragg coffee cup ass, but, looking back on it now seems vodka-clear by then our work there was more or less done.you're very fucking welcome,

Saw Billy Bragg three times. In Rochester, he had a cold and didn't sing much. Just talked politics, which we completely enjoyed. But a few losers yelled, "Shut up and sing!" enough times that Billy had to give them the wet fur.
Capitalism has already killed music. I saw U2 for ten bucks at the Bayou in Georgetown. I paid two for the Furs there. I always try to listen to the little music guys.
Ani Difranco's answer to the big record companies is this: "I could be the million that you never made." And because she refused to use a major label and instead publishes herself--and others like Bragg and Wilco, she's hardly in a single record store (though Best Buys carries all her stuff, for some reason!) and doesn't get any airplay. I like to listen to the ones not greedy enough to strive to play at the Tower or the Capital Center or some other sports stadium.
Anyway, I have nothing to say.

P.S. Oh, trouble, I know you didn't mean me when you referred to the bearded one, though that is my chat name. (Usually they call me "Oh Great Bearded One."
