Bad News

Posted by Jonathan on February 25, 2002, at 8:54:54

My father had a stroke this morning. The doctor says he is unlikely to recover.

I never feel able to post here or answer email when I'm really miserable. I already feel guilty about the backlog of messages I haven't yet answered because of a recent bad patch (Krazy Kat, Pedr, IsoM, et al.)

In the words of the fin de (20-eme) siecle Viennese philosopher Schwartzenegger:

I'll be back.

:) Jonathan.

Sorry to hear about your dad Jonathan. There's no need to feel guilty about not replying, even if you are at 100% which you're not. We all know how difficult things are when you're feeling rough so don't worry about it.
Best wishes,
pete.

Terrible news, Jonathan, it sucks, I know all about it.

The best thing you can do is to be by your Pa as often as possible, and to make sure he knows you are there.

Also, your Ma needs all the support she can get, so be there for her as well.

If you have family outside of your location, call them ... let them know.

Gather your immediate family members together to discuss the "future."

Talk to the doctors and make sure they're doing things right. If you're not sure about medication or procedures, ASK QUESTIONS. If you're not happy with the answers, then seek other opinions/advice. Take a look at his medicine sheet for any obvious errors you may see. Nothing is "cut and dry" in medicine.

But also take care of yourself: sleep, food, relaxation, etc.

Don't worry about answering posts. There's no need to explain why you can't.

I wish you and your Pa the best and just be there for him.

kazoo

Thanks, everyone

My dad died peacefully in hospital at 2:15 on Saturday morning (2nd March); it was his 86th birthday.
Although the ambulance reached him in 5 minutes, his brain had been starved of oxygen for at least 20 minutes by the time they succeeded in resuscitating him; he never recovered consciousness, but was breathing oxygen without artificial ventilation and looked very comfortable the whole time.

I'd like to say more, but don't yet feel able to; I'm especially bad at talking about personal matters.

Thank you *so* much for your support and friendship, Dinah, Tina, Nikki, Krazy Kat, Noa, Pedr, Bekka, Kazoo, Cam and Patti, Greg, and everyone else who responded. It's overwhelming to hear that so many people all over the world are thinking of us.

In the few minutes my wife banished me to the computer because my ineffectual attempts to help her pack were a hindrance, I received two posts here and an email from friends in three different countries (and two continents) who happened to be online at the time. This is truly an international support community on which the sun never sets.

Thanks again :)

Jonathan.
