i hate you, don't leave me

Posted by sar on July 25, 2001, at 19:40:03

I work in a bookstore and cannot *believe* how many copies of this title we sell! I'm sure I notice it only because I snagged a copy for myself (having a quasi-diagnosis of Borderline PD)--but between that book and Stop Walking on Eggshells, Borderline Personality Disorder seems to be a bestseller in the world of psychology. I'm never asked to locate a book on the narcissistic personality, antisocial, shizotypal, etc...

any opinions?

i wonder if it was featured on OPRAH....LOL
I used to work in a bookstore and every time Oprah reviewed or even mentioned a book title, we sold out of it in one day.

I think today, people are grabbing hold of any explanation for the way they are feeling. They can't just simply exist in the pain that they feel. This world is a hard place to take and sometimes a little validation makes one feel better. I have a hundred books like this(not this one in particular) and just knowing that someone else is experiencing the same feelings helps.
just a theory

if I were a narcissist (okay, i don't remember very well what that category is or who's supposed to go in it) ... but if I were a narcissist, maybe I'd think I was perfect and didn't need self-improvement bks? I dunno. if so, psych presses may need smarter mkting strategy. my conjecture.

A link through Anorexia Anonymous, interesting reading about BPD, for those interested.

I hate you, don't leave me.

converse: Don't leave me, I hate you.
inverse: I don't hate you, don't leave me.
contrapositive: Don't leave me, I don't hate you.

is that how you do it?? I don't remember. I vote for contrapositive (inv. sounds kinda defensive)

Tina,

So funny that you mention Oprah...we get her suggestions daily. (Do you have any funny bookstore stories? I had a suicide-blonde in linen come in asking where the "coffee-table books" were located; she wanted to buy her parents an anniversary gift; the latest scream was a girl who came in asking for "road-trip books" and after I pointed her to the Travel section she said, "No, you know, like road trip books? Like crosswords and stuff so you don't get bored?")

I stole a copy of *I Hate You, Don't Leave Me.* I suppose that is part of my impulse-control problem. Anyway, I've come to the decision that I'm a borderline borderline. Anyway, I'm a big researcher and it helps to read about reasons/treatments etc, no matter what the "official" diagnosis is.

i just wonder why borderline sales predominate so noticeably over the other what, 6 or 7 personality disorders? i can understand why an avoidant personality wouldn't want to buy an avoidancy book, or how an antisocial couldn't believe (s)he fit that description (it's contrary to the disorder)--but...volumes upon volume of mass market paperbacks! it blows my mind.

my former psychoanalyst had the theory that personality disorder precedes depression...what she was saying,in effect, was that personality disorders are as common as depression and *cause* depression.

what to make of this? i don't know. curious what others think.

thanks for the link, g.

i think i'm kind of borderline. my rationalism sometimes tempers the emotionalism. but not enough.

interseting that it was through an eating disorders site, because i had eating disordered behavior a couple years back. a borderline anorexic! "you can never be too rich or too thin," i thought on the treadmill. it was pretty fuct up.

i've gained 15 pounds (nearly normal weight!) and wonder why there is such a correlation.

Hey sar
Bookstores have got to be the funniest places to work. You get all kinds. I once had a lady ask where the sex books were(very hush hush) and I showed her and she said "oh god they're right there in the open? How can you do that? shouldn't they be somewhere private?" so I asked her what she planned to do with them that they had to be in a room by themselves.......LOL

I loved the way people would always ask where certain books were but they were usually standing right in front of the section they were looking for.
have a good one

Sar

The link said that some people with eating disorders once treated for the eating disorder the similarities to BPD disappear.

Wonders what you can learn on the internet, when you can sit down and chat with so many people!?
