new to the board...

Posted by steelcity_usa on April 11, 2004, at 16:37:42

Hi. I'm 22 and in college (architecture) and have just recently been diagnosed as depressed. I started taking zoloft (50 mg for one week now at 100 mg) 10 days ago. I was wondering if anyone else here is of similar age/situation?

Hi steelcity_usa and welcome! I also suffer from depression, and take meds. I'm older than you, but there are plenty of folks here in your general age range. And age doesn't seem to be a big issue here in general anyway. I look forward to hearing more from you!

Hi and welcome.
I, too am older than you, but I am in college. I know how much stress that adds. I have atypical depression, and probably had it for a couple of decades before getting the right diagnosis and the right medication.

good luck to you,
gg

Hi, steelcity...Welcome.

I'm older(mid-40's), but I first sought treatment for depression when I was your age--22. Back then, there were not as many meds available to choose from so I did not go on meds until a number of years later, when the SSRIs came out.

It is so good that you are getting help now. Are you in therapy as well as on meds?

I know that being in school can be a lot of pressure. In school, I think it can often feel like the work day has no end and no beginning, really--it is just constant. When I was in school, after working for a few years, I remember thinking that if I wasn't asleep, I was either at school, or working on school work, or feeling guilty that I wasn't working on my school work! I couldn't get away from it.

I hope you are in a field that you really like. That is so important.

Anyway, welcome. You'll find that there are people here of all ages and often the age factor doesn't matter so much.

Yes, I'm seeing a psychiatrist weekly. I don't know how much I'm enjoying what I'm studying anymore, which is scary because I've invested four years into studying architecture and I don't know if I don't like it anymore or if I'm completely burned out. I'm not motivated to do any work... feel like I'm racing to catch up. All I can think about is finding my dad, whom I've never met and whom I believe I may have located. I just think about leaving school and going to his house or wanting to have a car wreck happen to me.

I'm new to the board too. My name is Tyagua and I was diagnosed bipolar (3ys ago) S.A.D. and PTSD and now I apparently have a borderline personality. I'm fed up, pissed off and need people to talk to who know what they're talking about!
You'll see me around I have a decent amount of free time.

well, hello...you are in good company...are you medicated and/or seeing a therapist? there is a long road ahead but the good news is that eventually you will find the right ``cocktail'' that will set yoou straight....sad is very real and is mainly attributable to where you live and the amount of sunlight you take in per diem. outside of denver, san diego, and austin, you are going to have to deal with it. light therapy seems to be indicated in alleviating sad...your bipolar dx and borderline personality disorder are likely to be intermingled: if you tend toward the hypomanic side or are in a mixed state, then it is highly probable that the borderline dx is manifesting itself as such. and btw, do not take the personality disorders too seriously: they are dx for lack of insight from your doctor. check out the dsm-iv tr for criteria, and you will see that you - and all of us - can be labelled in any number of personality disorders. if you are angry, antisocial, and miffed about your dx, then join the club... best, chemist

WOW. That is big. Are you ready for that big step--finding your father? I'm sure it is such a hard process to go through.

Maybe you should think about finishing your work for the semester before deciding wether to go through with trying to meet your father? Have you discussed this with your therapist? Do you have anyone else in your family/friends, etc. who can help you with the decision?

As for fantasizing about wrecking the car, if you are close to acting on that, please please tell your therapist. And if you think you will be unsafe driving, please, don't drive.

You must be feeling really badly to have that thought. I had the car-wreck thoughts in the past, too.

But I don't have those thoughts anymore, and I want to tell you that I'm glad I never acted on those thoughts (or similar ones). Depression CAN get better. Really. It can.

Take care.
