> Does anyone have any experience with psycotherapy for ocd. Im trying to decide whether meds or psychotherapy is the way to go.
> THe psychotherapist says that he does not want me on any meds for the therapy so that we will know what is effective/ not effective.
> It all seems kind of weird to me. He says that there are feelings of anger etc beneath that i cover over and suppress with anxiety, tension and ocd. It sort of seems like an old freudian approach to it. Any thoughts anyone?

<My opinion>

Freudian stuff is antiquated, and nonsensical. CBT is much more well studied and it cuts through all the chase; targeting specific symptoms. For OCD, it is at least as effective as high doses of SSRI's, without bothersome side-effects. It does require work though. Therein lies the advantage of medication.

Find a good CBT-oriented therapist. Call around and ask if they specifically provide CBT. Anything else is really no longer the standard of care for OCD. If you're lucky enough to live in or around NYC, I could make some suggestions.

Let me know,

Matt

Mattthhhh,
REBT (Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy) is strong for OCD. REBT is a very much overlooked therapy that I found _immensely_ powerful and helpful with my obsessional anxiety-driven thinking. It's not woolly-touchy-feely like it's name suggests, it's no-messing-powerful-logic-but-flexible that really got to grips with my thinking that was depressing me and making me horribly anxious. See "Overcoming Anxiety" by Windy Dryden or anything else by him - he's a good REBT proponent.

HTH,
pedr
