Hi, I'm new here and need some advice. Two years ago I began seeing a pdoc/psychoanalyst whom I heard about from someone on the Internet. I decided to go to him after hearing he sometimes utilizes a rare therapeutic technique which I have been interested in for years. I meant to ask him about it but never got the guts to mention it because it's a very sensitive subject for me.
The sessions were very difficult and though there have been some insights, he tended to be very sarcastic, spoke angrily and made humiliating remarks. I felt constantly under attack and couldn't seriously discuss anything during the therapy sessions.
After several months I asked if I could have some time to think before continuing. He told me that he probably wouldn't accept me as a patient again if I were to return and slammed the door in my face.
This happened over a year ago and I can't stop thinking about it. Not because I am considering resuming therapy but because I have been obsessed for many years with the thing I meant to ask him about but never did. I feel that even if it would not have been an option for him to use that method
in therapy in my case, it would have helped to ask him about it since the discussion could have finally ended my obsession. There is no one else with whom to discuss this particular matter (no one would have that knowledge or experience, not to mention that the method is no longer used) and I can't get it out of my mind.Do you think it would be appropriate to ask him for a session or two (just to clear up that issue and get it out of my mind) and risk being insulted and kicked out the door:)? I know this sounds like a stupid question but I really can use some objective advice and would appreciate any response.
Sari.

Hell no! Unless you are in a one-Pdoc town, blow that loser off! Unless you are into scream therapy, no "doctor" should EVER have to yell at you. And certainly, I wouldn't accept that sort of behavior from ANY medical professional. As a matter of fact, I would have sent something to his local AMA branch or affiliated hospital to complain about such unprofessional treatment! Damn, this makes me mad, and I don't even KNOW you! Get some help from someone else. Finding the right physician is almost the same as shopping for shoes, find the one that fits YOU the best, dont' accept one that makes your "feet sore". If you have any other questions, PLEASE toss them out, perhaps your question can be answered here, no one knows who you are (except Dr. Bob). Post away!

I myself would not go back. I would find another therapist to consult with about the whole experience, because it sounds like the therapy was not only not helpful, but may have been hurtful.
Yes, and now you've caught our attention and curiosity--feel free to throw the question out there and see if anyone knows anything, or can point you in the direction of further info.

Pax, Jyl and Noa,
After reading your messages I am really beginning to see things more objectively. Perhaps there really was something wrong with that pdoc and it wasn't only me that triggered his behavior.
Thank you all!
Sari.

Hi Sari,
I know I'm late in posting this, but I agree with the others. No, it's not you. This pdoc is paid to help people handle their problems and I have never heard of anyone using his techniques to help others feel better about themselves. It's hard to believe this person is even in business. It's possible that his questionable success has gone to his head. I've found that some megalomaniacs really believe that acting like he did makes them appear more successful and desirable. I wonder how many other patients have been treated that way and if they have filed complaints. I would recommend you doing that if you're up to it and I would never go back.

You ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY should never go back to that jackass.
Therapy is a place to heal, not a place to wound. I don't know what specific "therapy" you were looking for, and I don't know what it was you meant to bring up with him. But listen, you need to find a safe place to talk about your very private, sensitive issues.
That guy shouldn't be allowed to practice.

It's understandable to be upset, and to want to protect brokenglass, but please don't use language that could offend others, thanks.
Bob
