what should I do?

Posted by brokenglass on April 7, 2003, at 15:05:14

Hi, I'm new here and need some advice.

Two years ago I began seeing a pdoc/psychoanalyst whom I heard about from someone on the Internet. I decided to go to him after hearing he sometimes utilizes a rare therapeutic technique which I have been interested in for years. I meant to ask him about it but never got the guts to mention it because it's a very sensitive subject for me.

The sessions were very difficult and though there have been some insights, he tended to be very sarcastic, spoke angrily and made humiliating remarks. I felt constantly under attack and couldn't seriously discuss anything during the therapy sessions.

After several months I asked if I could have some time to think before continuing. He told me that he probably wouldn't accept me as a patient again if I were to return and slammed the door in my face.

This happened over a year ago and I can't stop thinking about it. Not because I am considering resuming therapy but because I have been obsessed for many years with the thing I meant to ask him about but never did. I feel that even if it would not have been an option for him to use that method
in therapy in my case, it would have helped to ask him about it since the discussion could have finally ended my obsession. There is no one else with whom to discuss this particular matter (no one would have that knowledge or experience, not to mention that the method is no longer used) and I can't get it out of my mind.

Do you think it would be appropriate to ask him for a session or two (just to clear up that issue and get it out of my mind) and risk being insulted and kicked out the door:)? I know this sounds like a stupid question but I really can use some objective advice and would appreciate any response.

Sari.
