I was one of the first users when I was in college in Minnesota- (I think I just made myself old :-), and it was extremely helpful for what turned out to be SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder or winter depression). There are no side effects, it's easy and really worthwhile if you think your depression is tied to winter. best of luck-judy

Judy,

Do you still presently use one?

can you give me any recommendations on a brand of lightbox?

Conversely, I've been told that I can easily build my own but it has to a light source with over 10,000 lumens. Do you have any knowledge about this?

Any further input would be very appreciative. thanks,

HK

Yes, for two winters now. It helps with the winter sluggishness. I also have a dawn simulator which I love (is broken at the moment and I miss it!!). It is so much more pleasant, for me, I discovered, to wake up to gradual light than to sound.

I think there is a whole folder of info about SAD at PB tips, which is a yahoo "annex" for psycho babble. The link is at the top of the main PB page. That is how I found my light box. I looked at a number of different companies' web sites that I got from the folder, comparison shopped, found one on sale that seemed good (greatest amount of light at relatively long distance--27 inches--at a reasonable price). It was on sale because it was being discontinued. I also bought my dawn simulator this way, and a smaller light box/desk lamp for my office at work. The folder also has sample letters for your pdoc to sign that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

Hello hok,

I've had a light box for about ten years, and I couldn't live without it. I use it throughout the year, even in the spring and summer on overcast days, although I'll use it for only a few minutes a day then. At this time of year, I use it for at least 30 minutes in the morning. Of course, there's no substitute for real spring and real summer, but I find the light box very helpful. Mine is from the Apollo Company, but I don't recommend them as your first choice because they've had consistent problems with the switches. I've heard that the Sunbox Company is good. They advertise in several psychiatric journals and newspapers. By the way, my cats like the light boxes, too!

I think of light as more medical than psychological, so I'd like this thread redirected to Psycho-Babble. Here's a link:
