David Burns' Feeling Good book and Verbal Judo

Posted by fuzzymind on December 14, 2002, at 5:44:05

Just read the first few paragraphs about Verbal Judo in the Felling Good book. Burns' claims that no matter how cruel or harsh or abusive an external comment, the source of the abusive feelings doesn't come from the outside, but from within. Anyone else buying this? WHen I was being preyed on by those Jewish and white kids in High School, it sure felt like it was coming from them. How do 'normal' Asians deal with this garbage? How was I supposed to learn. DI I miss something about learning about this in pre-school or kindergarten. WHy don't school start emphasizing self- esteem. Just angry I never learned any of this. An I am also angry others have and I am wondring how they were able to learn without studying a self help book

I think "please be civil" applies here - I'm not real fond of anti-Semitism.

Wasn't meant to be. If he were Korean like I was I would have said the same thing. I label everyone , including myself.

Fuzzymind, I think that may be your problem. Self-labels stem from cognitive distortions such as all-or-nothing thinking..Once you apply a label, it tends to stick. Many of us with self-esteem issues have a tendency to make these cognitive errors. You are not alone there. Keep working on the Burns book. It has helped me during times of trouble. In fact, I need to go back to it right now. Good luck. It's good to see that the book is helping you. :-)

I'm glad you feel free to share your feelings, but GMAFB. I'm Jewish, and too many of us use that as a license to limit others' speech but throw our own abuse around. We can abuse goys - like the poster's schoolmates did - and should they complain, we can just call them anti-semitic. This behavior justifies prejudice.

So yes, part of the poster's problem is labeling and all-or-nothing thinking. But accusing him of anti-semitism because he referenced being goaded by one of our tribe, well, that just ain't kashruth. Concerns can be voiced civilly. Screaming anti-semitism is not civil.
