stablon + cortisol levels

Posted by g_g_g_unit on April 4, 2010, at 22:20:55

hi, i was interested in trying tianeptine for a diagnosed combination of depression, OCD and ADD

i know that SSRI's (which i can't tolerate) raise cortisol and that tianeptine lowers it, but, shy of having my cortisol levels checked, are there any ways of determining whether tianeptine might suit my state of depression? or is it pointless trying to overintellectualize the issue?

Sometimes, I feel like it is pointless to try to assume mastery of the use of psychotropic drugs by attempting to understand their actions and what the clinical result would be from their application. Still, I think we can make educated guesses. If I were in your position, I would try tianeptine if you are convinced that there is enough evidence of its utility through clinical observation. I think you should post a question on the medication board to see if anyone has any experience with the drug for treating the conditions you are suffering from.

thanks for your response. from what i can gather, tianeptine does suit my condition(s). however, like you say, we can make educated guesses and i do wonder whether raising or lowering cortisol might be beneficial/harmful in certain cases.

you can get cortisol tests, i think its a salivary measurement. you'd probably need to do it a few times (once right first thing in the morning, another midday, etc)

this is the best paper i've seen on the topic
http://www.neurotransmitter.net/Gold.pdf

i don't think i've seen evidence particular antidepressants cause directional changes in cortisol, once accounting for starting level (ie, are they reducing cortisol->antdepressant effect, or are they antidepressing you-> nomalized cortisol)

yup, i've ordered a saliva test, just out of curiosity's sake. something definitely feels out of whack, though it's never consistent. there are times where i feel so tired during the day i can barely stay awake, and other times, like lately, where i am surging with adrenaline and riddled with intense muscle tension

hmm .. well all of my concern over this started after a poster at mindandmuscle warned me off stablon because he said it might dramatically worsen symptoms of atypical depression (and stress response), as opposed to SSRI's which acutely raise cortisol. if it's more of a grey area than that, then i'll definitely conduct a stablon experiment

I read something recently that indicated that Remeron produced a significant reduction in cortisol levels while Effexor did not. I believe they measured salivary cortisol.
