Sam-E serotonergic but not dopaminergic?

Posted by Lamdage22 on January 5, 2014, at 4:52:54

Am i right in the assumption that Sam-E is serotonergic, noradrenergic but not dopaminergic?

That would make it an ideal augmenter for Moclobemide for me.

I was under the impression that it had some effect on all three monoamines.

Yes.. thats correct. Im looking for sth. serotonergic only.

I think i may give 5htp a shot. Although i dont know if heart health is an issue to any statistically significant degree with 5htp.

If its fine i will be on it asap.

I do not believe you can pin down SAMe mechanisms exactly because they are too many. Methylation happens all over the body. Depending on the particular person, we will never know what it was about SAMe that helped them feel better....
-was it the extra methyl groups?
-was it the sulfur?
-was it the adenosyl?
-was it serotonin or dopamine?

You'll never know. The only way to know if it is helpful to you or not is a personal trial.

I tried it because literature suggested strongly that there is a dopamine connection there. Maybe the first couple days I felt some dopaminergic stuff, but that faded away. After that, guess what happened.....numb, flat, the same as SSRIs! I couldn't believe it!

Why? Sound like too much serotonin right? In reality, we will never know.

I love armchair quarterbacking....figuring out in advance exactly what a substance will do and how that might fit my needs....but in the real world I have not seen that produce real results. Due to the lack of knowledge of what disease we are actually dealing with in our own body, the lack of complete understanding of all the mechanisms of a substance, and the fact that paradoxical reactions happen, armchair quarterbacking of SAMe isn't going to get any of us anywhere. The only way is to set the research on a shelf, go buy some SAMe, and start taking it.

Short answer to your question:

I've been on SAMe several times over the years, doses from 50mg up to 400mg. I cannot comment on higher doses because I never tried them.

What I felt:
Serotonin...fairly strong, emotional numbing capability.
Dopamine...noticeable but faded.
NE...very little if any felt.

But that is only one person's personal report.
Antidepressant effect overall....fairly good. Ask someone else who had a good response and they might say amazing instead.

I took Sam-E along with Nardil for a few months. When I told the Dr. he advised me to stop. It actually worked excellent for me. Seemed to hit the right spot to ward off my anhedonia.
Maybe I will give it a try someday with Emsam?
New combo name: "SAMSAM"

I had my first manic episode in 1999 shortly after starting to take Sam-E. I was smoking a ton of pot at the time and didn't know I had Bipolar. The combo of extremely potent Montreal marijuana + SAMe really set me off.....

Just tred cautiously if you're prone to mania....
