Gotu Kola success stories, dosage info?

Posted by former poster on January 22, 2012, at 1:48:30

I'm a fan of Gotu Kola. I would like to know if anyone else out there has had much luck with it. Also wondering about mega dosing, toxicity, etc..

Hey brotha..how have you been?

Am I recalling correctly that you have a condition that may inbilge autoimmunity and pain? Have you done any research on LDN?

From what I read, high doses otv gotu kola are believed to be safe. I know GK can be calming and in one study appeared to reduced sensitivity to loud noise.

Hi Morgan. I'm ok. Glad to see you still on babble.
G.T. may help with hearing sensitivity? Thats great news because thats also an issue for me. You are right about my condition. Seems to be chronic fatigue syndrome, or is it called fibromyalgia now? Any new treatments for my plethora of symptoms? Social anxiety, depression, derealization and of course the CFS.

What do I like about GT? Seems to have a nootropic effect, improves sociability, memory. Wikipedia says its good for social anxiety, something I have struggled with all my life.

Should I try double the recomended dose?

I'm glad you're having success with it. Maybe I should sell you the rest of my bottle! I tried it for about a weak and found, with me, that it sent my stress levels and irritability way up. I may try it again. Sometimes I have different reactions if I try things again. Right now DMAE and phenylalanine are working for me.

Hey man..I think it might be a good idea to try LDN. Just google LDN and you will find plenty of information on it. I started a thread on my beginning of treatment on the medication board.

Morgan.. I looked up LDN and it sounds very promising. Maybe another symptom of mine it can help is my anhedonia? Suprized to hear that it works on depersonalization. I'm so used to being spaced out and in a cloud... I almost forgot I have this symptom.
I knew I could count on you for some good advice.
Thanks Bro..

Hey no problem brotha. I do know that LDN can take some time, and there can be side effects and discomfort in the beginning, just so you know. It may be wise if you try it to start at 1 mg and slowly work your way up to 3 or 4.5.

I would be interested to see how you respond to LDN if you try it. I will keep everyone posted on my experience over on the medication board.

Peace..

Morgan... I tried to find your post about LDN in the medication babble. I thought there was a search window? Can't find your post. Can't search. I'll find it eventually.

I'm leaving the country on a business trip. Maybe when I get back I can tell my Dr. I want to give LDN a try?

Yeah it might not be a bad idea to ask your doctor.

The thread is titled "I started LDN!!!" It should be around the middle of the page. It's definitely there, you will find it.

Have a good trip, man.

Gotu Kola, thanks for mentioning that. I've experimented with many plants but that is one I missed. I have read widely varying responses of it over the years, so obviously it still falls under the rule 'mileage varies'. I'm all for trying new stuff, so thanks for bringing it up.

CFS. Fibro. Lyme. MS. These are all kind of in the same family, much overlap, difficult to draw boundary lines. Any of them, or similar diseases, can look like another and be diagnosed as another, and then of course treated wrongly with subpar results.

Interesting story. A Lyme specialist I used to see became an expert on accident. He began as a Pain and Fatigue specialist. So obviously, most of his patients were CFS, Fibro, arthritis. But over the years he noticed an interesting trend....when his patients had to take antibiotics for some other unrelated reason, their symptoms got better. Eventually through experience, testing, and hunch from clues, it became apparent that most of these patients actually had.....Lyme disease, not CFS, not Fibro, not anything else. They all have one thing in common....an immune system in confusion.....a civil war inside your own body where your own army is attacking your own healthy flesh as if it was a foreign substance.

The best treatments I have seen for any of those conditions include a variety of herbs commonly used for Lyme, antibiotics, adaptogens, specific food choices or avoidances, and LDN. In terms of foods, the most guilty offenders likely to worsen symptoms include gluten and dairy.

I found the following at http://intelegen.com/nutrients/brain_regeneration_key_nutrients.htm

A breakthrough year occurred in 2005 regarding the number of studies published using Gotu kola extracts on brain function and structural changes. In one study, where Gotu kola was given to mice during postnatal development stage (the) extract caused brain cell dendrite outgrowth and branching of dendrites in the hippocampal area of the brain. This showed the extract can influence the neuronal morphology and promote the higher brain function of juvenile and young adult mice. In other words, permanent structural out branching of the neural network of the brain was observed and this resulted in higher brain functioning.31-32

In the same year, Gotu kola alcohol extract stimulated a marked increase in neurite outgrowth in human brain cells. It was shown than many different fractions of Gotu kola extracts produced neurite branching and outgrowth from the human cells, proving that there are several active principles in Gotu kola causing this growth. These active principals were identified as asiaticosides and asiatic acid. When the alcohol extract was added to the drinking water of old rats (they) demonstrated more functional recovery and increased axonal regeneration (of neurites and dendrites), larger calibers of axons and greater numbers of myelinated (sheath-covered) axons. The authors concluded taken together, our findings indicate that components in Centella ethanolic [Gotu kola] extract may be useful for accelerating repair of damaged neurons.33

The most desirable Gotu kola extract to use is a hydro-alcoholic extract standardized to a much higher percentage of active asiaticoside principles than the vast majority of Gotu kola extracts.

Thanks for that great info! Gotu Kola seems to be the best brain booster I have found. I'll have to look into trying a good tincture.
