any ideas about what could be making me so tired?

Posted by g_g_g_unit on July 7, 2009, at 6:52:29

based on my doctor's advice, i've tapered off memantine in order to get a better idea as to which of my problems are intrinsic and which are lingering sfx. he also advised that i restart up my program for undermethylation, prescribed by another gp. at the moment i am taking:

morning-
1000mg l-methionine
100mg b6
50mg p5p
80mg:80mg cal/mag supp x 2
500mg vit c

night
1000mg l-methionine
30mg zinc picolinate
500mg vit c
80:80mg cal/mag x 2

at this point, i am not naive enough to believe that any single supplement could be the sole culprit of my symptoms (something i've been guilty of in the past); i do have issues w/ sleep disruption which make me more tired during the day. but since restarting the regime, i have felt noticeably more tired during the day. it's not really anything to do with physical energy. i just get really sleepy. i'm looking at getting hormone testing done soon for depression, but in the meantime i'd rather not exacerbate any tiredness. the doctor's rationale behind b6 and p5p is to see whether my body can convert b6 on its own; he'll then eliminate one accordingly. my guess is either the high b6+p5p dose or cal/mag in the morning might be doing it?

The calmag is a pretty low dose so it would not be my first suspect, though it certainly could be. I am extremely sensitive to mag. It depresses me and makes me very tired at any dose. I eat food choices with a focus on magnesium and it is ok that way, but not extra with supplements. You could try skipping one of those doses, or cut them both in half?

Vitamin C makes me very tired. I can't take it during the day. If I take it, it is at night before bed. Vitamin C slows down cortisol production. Again, I get it naturally. Fruit juice, about every 2 hours. It is ok for me that way, but not in supplements. If I take a C supplement, it is at most 125mg.

P5p is powerful. There is no way to know what it is doing except to stop it temporarily and see what happens.

Methione. Have you ever had silver fillings in your teeth? Methione is a fairly strong sulfur compound. It is strong enough to lift stored heavy metals in tissues such as mercury and lead, and get them into circulation, but not strong enough to hold onto them all the way out. In other words, heavy metals are stirred up. I know from my own chelation experiences that when metals are stirred up, chronic tiredness is the top symptom.

Lyme disease is worth considering. Read up on it and see if it might fit you at all.

Yes, it could be the Cal/Mag supplement. Too much can cause you to feel rather sedated. In myself, I like calcium, but I don't take it anymore because, believe it or not, it causes me to have insomnia. I take only magnesium alone, and the magnesium actually helps me sleep better at night. I actually used to be able to take a cal/mag supplement without really any side effects, but I limited myself to one 750mg cal/mag tablet in the morning. I didn't take any at bedtime. Maybe you're just taking too much of both minerals and your body doesn't respond well to that. Ask your doctor what he or she thinks about it. Good luck.

thanks for your reply. i've never had silver fillings in my teeth, so don't suspect i have mercury poisoning.

i actually tried stopping everything the other day and noticed no real difference. i have recently been diagnosed with a breathing difficulty (a specialist performed a lung function test) - party caused by overactive trigger points on my clavicle & poor posture, and also potentially due to sinus and/or reflux (he's trying to ascertain which one at the moment). i notice my energy is a lot worse while in repose and at work, so poor breathing patterns could be feeding into it.

exercising greatly helps my energy levels, and i notice i become a lot more alive/active at night. i was looking up symptoms of adrenal fatigue and they seemed to match, i.e. i sleep in late when left to it, the aforementioned changes in energy levels throughout the day. i am thinking of asking my doctor to perform a saliva panel test. since i also experience awakenings throughout the night - never attaining deep sleep - that no doubt could be contributing to my daytime energy issues. therefore, i'm also thinking of maybe getting a sleep study done.

something like lyme i've considered. but i guess i have to prioritize since i get too carried away with potential diseases :) since sleep & breathing are such huge red-flags, i figured i may as well try treating those first, and then seeing if the problem still persists...

I would stop taking the Zinc at night and see how that makes you feel throughout the day. Zinc picolinate makes some people tired.

Also from what I read, you should really supplement copper with zinc.
