Taurine

Posted by Zazen on March 20, 2008, at 18:01:12

I am looking for things to calm a hyperactive nervous system and recently tried PHARA-GABA that made me tingle and feel pretty bad. Will taurine cross the blood barrier and should it be taken on an empty stomach.

i am not sure about the blood barrier but taurine can rev you up.. not what you want for a hyper nervous system.. it is one of the ingredients in energy drinks.

It does cross the b/b Barrier. I'm not sure if it needs to be taken on an empty stomach. Some amino acids are much better absorbed (into brain at least) without others competing, with others it doesn't matter. Not sure w/ taurine. I think i have noticed more noticeable effects taking on empty stomach but not sure.

I was just reading another post where someone said taurine does not cross the BBB, so maybe it officially does not. It's definitely had an effect on me multiple times in the past though, at 1 - 2.5 grams (usually 1.5 or 2 g), and i thought it was believed to anyway. It's strange though if it officially does not cross. It's like with GABA-- it supposedly does not cross the BBB yet a large number of people have claimed to have noticeable effects from its supplementation, and i believe them (i have not tried GABA). Anyway just wanted to throw that in there.

Taurine

I haven't heard that Taurine has trouble crossing the blood/brain barrier. Looking at some old 2006 posts by Larry Hoover (the alternative guru here), he indicates quite the opposite and that as a result, it works in minutes. He cautioned not to take it too late in the day as it may cause insomnia (he said leave at least 6 hours between last taurine and bedtime).

Elsewhere, I recall reading that you can take it with food (unlike some of the other amino acids).

One quirk I've read about (and noticed in myself) is that it might make you feel chilly based on its influence on the hypothalamus.

Taurine helps me with anxiety, but then I'm taking clonazepam (a prescription benzodiazipine) too.

Hopes this helps (and I'd be happy to be corrected by anyone).
