l-theanine ok with antidepressents?

Posted by laima on January 27, 2007, at 18:59:16

I've used a small amount of this before as an alternative to benzos, no problem. I bought a new bottle today, different brand than before, and once home noticed the label says (in small letters):

"Discuss with Dr. before attempting to take if using ssris or maois".

Why? Yikes. What could the warning be about? I'm using Emsam.

They're just covering themselves. I think theaine is found in tea, particulary green tea. Yes I just looked it up....:

Do check with your doc/pdoc first through. Particulary with ensam as its not been out that long.

Thanks Merri. They probably are covering themselves. It did seem strange because theanine is in green tea. But you know, Emsam's not so "new" if you consider selegeline has been out for decades.

Well, I took them (deprenyl and theanine) together, which (on reflection) might be a reason never to try it....I don't have brilliant sleep patterns.
OTOH I'm still here.

Hi Declan- You lived to tell about it then! Perhaps the warning is a generic style warning-responsable, understandable. We have a chain of health food/guormet stores here in the US called Whole Foods. They by policy refuse to answer any questions about potentially psychoactive supplements if a customer mentions a word like "antidepressent", saying, "we can't take any responsability- you must consult a healthcare practitioner". Well, theanine is the ingredient frm green tea, and I've never heard any warnings about avoiding green tea while on antidepressents. I'll dig around later and try to figure out how much theanine a few cups of green tea has, just for comparison's sake. Maybe it's an amount thing- these capsules are 200mg, if I remember correctly. That might be a lot of cups of tea. OR, maybe they don't want people taking theanine on top of presription sleep meds, benzos, or sedating drugs. Perhaps they fear a drop in blood pressure with maois. But ssris??

Thanks- but I was using l-theanine for some anxiety, especially at night. I've used benzos in past, but ended up having so many problems with them that I was interested in looking at alternatives first before ever going back to them. The theanine has worked out alright. I like rhodolia, too- but for me it seems to be more of a stimulant. I couldn't possibly use it at night. Curious- do you find it relaxing? Would you use it at night?

Thanks.

I also have used theanine with antidepressants, including MAOis. I cannot imagine a reason why it'd be dangerous...never had any issues with it myself.

I also drink lots of green tea with my antidepressants. Again, no issues.

Turns out now I've had no issues, either. Just being super-careful.
