tryptophan

Posted by saturn on November 30, 2006, at 10:27:29

Hi. I realize this has been discussed previously, but since tryptophan has been recently re-allowed in the US over-the-counter, I'd be interested in hearing any experiences with it--good, bad or indifferent. Or any other discussion regarding tryptophan.

Thanks.

I tried tryptophan briefly. It gave me a terrible stomach ache and I felt just as crappy as I did on SSRIs, meaning anxious and draggy.

Agree, even when it wasnt otc here it was still highly used since getting it wasnt really much more than just dealing with wait time,no one was at the gates watching for it lol.

But yeah,i hoped a LOT from it,and actualy of all the aminos l taurine,l theanine are the two that come to mind that had any significant feel to them that wasnt bad.Good luck.

tryptophan was possible the worst thing i had taken out of all the supplements, meds, herbs e.t.c. It made me feel like i had a wicked hangover. I rid this hangover feeling out after two weeks it went away after a month of taking the amino acid i felt alwful and stopped cold turkey, this was not good. I sunk had much more heighten anxiety until eventually this turned into deep depression. In all not a good supplement for me.

Hello:

I am very med sensitive and I count most supplements as a type of med, in my case.

I have tried it a few times and I bought 500mg caps. I slept well the first night I tried it but I seemed a little more aggresive and irritable. Weird anixety stuff too. I didn't want to believe it since it was helping my sleep but I stopped after few days and the irritability left as did the sleep benefits. I waited a week or so and tried again with the same result. Nice sleep but other symptoms were worse.

I've tried trytophan several times. One time it was for a week. It made me relaxed and very sleepy, but seemed to worsen depression. The sexual dysfunction was even worse than ssri antidepressants. Other times I tried it for just 2 days, having some mild improvement of mood the first day followed by a worsened depression the second day. And very sleepy. And goodbye sex.

I've tried a bunch of amino acids. I like tyrosine for its immediate mood boost, but it poops out in just days. Same results with DLPA.
I tried taurine for calming and though it didn't calm as expected, it somehow in an unidentifiable way had me feeling a little better, almost as if it somehow makes all the other natural aminos in your body work better.

The problem I have had with all aminos is that they just poop out real fast. It seems like my body compensates radidly to the extra amounts.

I have used l-tryptophan for the last 3 years, I have tried doses up to 10g per day, but found 500mg just as effective as any dose. The effects take several weeks to show and for some reason I feel better if I take them for 4 - 6 weeks at a time (500mg at night on empty stomach with carbohydrate), then stop for several months.
During these months my mood is stable.

Just my tuppence worth.
