Blueberries and hippocampal regeneration

Posted by sregan on October 27, 2006, at 21:44:32

I was reading an old post where Linkadge said he got relief from depression from Blueberries

"I got relief from depression from blueberry extract. The anthocyannins in blueberries are powerfull promoters of hippocampal neurogenesis. They also release dopamine, and are powerful antiinflamintories."

I've been eating them for three days and feeling pretty good. Some of the latest thinking on Fibromyalgia is that its a dopamine deficiency. Most are in agreement that CFS, FMS and perhaps several types of depression/anxiety disorder are due to HPA issues because of the hippocampus. If that is the case than the berries: Blue, straw, bil and elder could be part of the cure. They are all high in anthocyanins. Studies showed rats fed blueberries showed hippcampal regeneration. The blueberry is considered by many as the most potent of the "superfoods".

Anybody else have any luck with them?

Hey..

I'm curious - are bilberries just as good? I imagine that they're even better - they're smaller, and *alot* more 'blue' ie have more annocynannins. The insides are totally purple whereas with blueberries its pretty clear. With blue/bilberries, what kinds of quantities do you need to eat to get any benefit?

Hmmm. I ask these questions because I live in Finland and here bilberries grow wild everywhere - my mother has a freezer full we picked last summer. You can even get 'billberry soup' and 100% bilberry cordial (with no sugar) which might be a (plesant!) way of pretending to be healthy.

Kind regards

Meri

In the rat study they fed them the equivalent of a cup a day for humans. I've read that Bilberries are the european Blueberry. How wonderful you have access to so many. Please let us know if/how they work for you.

I'd think that billberries would have some of the same benifits if not all.

Sounds good to me, nature has been around billions of years, humans not so long :P We're getting better at designing drugs etc, but I feel we're still a long way off from the healing power of nature. Take everything in moderation and respect nature, don't take more than you need and I'm sure you will be enjoy the benefits of blueberries and bilberries :)

Supposedly cinnamon is high in polyphenols. I also heard that cinnamon is one of the top in terms of anxioxidant capacity.

I stopped my low dose of Klonopin and have been on the blueberries for 2+ weeks and just changed jobs (very stressful for me). After two weeks I have been almost free of anxiety with today being the exception. I've had a "blast" of anxiety today. I'm not sure why today when the last two weeks have been pretty good. Nothing has really changed, new job stress is resolving? Anyway I feel pretty good about the blueberry extract (also Bilberry from iherb.com) I've been taking along with the fresh ones.
