Omega-3 and nausea?

Posted by B2chica on June 13, 2006, at 10:28:49

i just found out i'm pregnant. i have been off all my meds for several months but wanted to start omega-3 because i heard it was to help some with depression plus it's good for baby.
but since i started i have noticed TONS of nausea...now the thing is it's most likely morning sickness. but if it is i don't want to stop. but if it's the pills i must stop.
i' stopped the pills for two days before and felt a little better but not much...so i'm not sure it's the pills.

but wanted to ask any of you does omega-3 cause nausea???
does it go away after a while?

thanks
b2c.

Always take PUFA supplements with food. The more fat in that food, the better. Yes, the omega-3 fats are good for you both. Post-partum depression is strongly linked with DHA levels. DHA is in algae, and in fish (which directly or indirectly eat the algae).

I'd like to think your nausea is unrelated to the omega-3 supplement. I hope you can tolerate it, for its benefits.

I have similar experience with nausea from both flax seed oil and fish oil.
What kind of omega-3 are you taking?
More than 4 gram of fish oil can cause nausea, confusion and insomnia.
I recommend that you stop taking it for a couple of days and retry with a lower dose

thanks! Larry.
that's one thing i haven't been doing (food with vitamins). i really hated to stop taking it because of the great benefits to baby (plus me).
i hate taking the horse pills and the few fish burbs during the day really gag me, but i'd like to stick it out if i can. at least for at least a few more months if possible.
Thanks!

I would concur with trying another brand. I didn't think brand mattered until I saw someone on here say their fish oil-associated acne went away with a brand change, so I tried it too and sure enough. I recommend Carlson's as a high quality brand. I usually order it from iHerb.

I last locally purchased Kal brand, "Omega 3 Lemon". No fishy burps with this one. I didn't used to buy Kal brand because of concerns about quality, but my local health food store owner said they had been bought out by Soloray and had been forced to upgrade all their products to Soloray standards.
