candida and mental health??

Posted by spriggy on August 6, 2005, at 14:50:45

I definitely have a yeast/cadida problem. Right now, I have a yeast infection in the lady region, and thrush in my mouth.

I got a yeast infection on average, once per month.

Does anyone know if candida overgrowth can attribute to anxiety/depression.

I notice when I have these yeast flare ups, I feel "different" in my moods.

For the record, I eat a TON of natural yogurt daily, I am on Probiotics, and eat acidophilus pills.

My dr. even put me on Nystatin this time around.

What else can I do to rid myself of this stuff?

Nyastatin is good. The most important thing is to eliminate from your diet anything the yeast can use for food. Which is mainly sugar of any sort, isn't it? This means go easy on fruits, eat lots of vegetables and protein. And nothing much else. I think people in your situation are often advised *not* to eat yoghurt, I forget whether it is because they often have allergies and should therefore avoid dairy, or whether it is because candida can use lactose (or whatever) for food. Anyway avoiding all forms of sugar is the main thing.
I took Nyastatin and probiotics for a year or so, mainly for allergies and fatigue/depresion.

Thanks Declan for your help.

Wow, if I'm not supposed to be eating yogurt, than I am in BIG trouble. Everything I have read about yeast says to eat yogurt with live cultures ( I buy the kind without any sugar-- it's pretty much gross tasting, LOL).

Anyway, when you used those things for a year, did it help you at all?

I have all the signs for candida- I am really having a hard time with that "foggy thinking" thing right now.

Yes Spriggy, it did help. It was part of a larger program using antoxidants, getting nutrition right, correcting hormonal balance and other things. I certainly lost weight and was able to reduce my dose of methadone to minimal levels, and my Valium dose somewhat. Feeling foggy and depressed though, I still have some of that.

With the yoghurt thing, the important thing may be whether your allergies/food reactions are triggered by milk products. Mine are, as are my son's, but more important with me is yeast. So I completely avoid wine and beer. When I did that my allergies settled down enough for me to notice what was making them worse, rather than being bad all the time. But to the extent possible you should avoid the things you react to, one of which, I seem to remember is mould, which I suppose is a bit like yeast. A lot of people have problems with these kinds of things. You also don't like humidity, no? I don't either.

But anyway the main thing is avoiding sugar, and the strictest diets for candida forbid fruit of any kind. And that's really hard. But I didn't do that. I went on a long term low dose Nyastatin and probiotic supplementation thing with the other things mentioned above. It really helped to have a nutritional doctor.

All the best
Declan
