Anyone healed psychosis with Niacin?

Posted by magee on July 28, 2005, at 16:08:18

If you have used orthomolecular psychiatry successfully I would like to know about it. The work of Abram Hoffer, MD proved 50 years ago that Schizoprenia ( and other mental illness) is completely curable with vitamin therapy, most specifically niacinamide, Vit C, Zinc.
I am really excited about this info and am currently gathering info and testimonials to present to my sister who is mentally ill with schizo-affective symptoms. She has been on the med roller coaster but has never found relief from her voices. She has no life until she can get down to the root of this. The poor thing has suffered for 25 years.
Thanks to anyone with direct successful experience or info.

I think the strongest evidence involves the use of vitamin C, and Niacin in schitsophrenia. Vitamin C, has an antidopaminergic activity, and antiglutamatergic activity. Neuroleptics mainly target dopaminergic neurotransmission. Niacin has a tranquilizing effect similar to valium. The two combined seem to show some efficacy in schitsophrenia. Vitamin C also antagonizes the effects of the stress hormone cortisol, which can be of benefit to those with mood disorders.

I don't have any specific links, but I do know that the two are the main alternative treatment for schitsophrenia.

This page has some info on Vitamin B3 and it's relationship to L-Tryptophan, it also says additional Niacin may be required in Psychosis.

http://www.clarocet.com/referencelibrary/B-vitamins/b3.htm

There's quite a lot of information here about psychosis and vitamin b3 therapy.

They also mention niacinamide (1000mg a day)works for psychosis. Niacinamide is generally mentioned to help with anxiety and not niacin, so it's interesting to note that niacin and niacinamide can be used in treatment of psychosis.

You'd be aware, I guess, of Mental and Elemental Nutrients by Carl Pfeiffer, Keats Publishing Inc, 1975. It has a bit on treatment of psychosis with niacin and the rest.

Hello Magee.
Thought this might interest you.
I've read Mental Health and Illness - The nutrition Connection by Carl Pfeiffer & Patrick Holford. It includes a chapter on the same Niacin therapy that you mention. But it also suggests another cause of Schizoprenia - Histapenia (excessively low Histamine production). It's thought to be caused by excessive amounts of copper. This can also be treated with Supplements - Zinc and Folic acid in particular.
A google search on Histapenia came up with nearly 200 links.
Good luck with everything.

I am a family doctor in Ireland who is interested in nutrition as an addition to and not a replacement for standard treatment in mental illness. In some but not all cases it works well and some get back to what appears to be full health, although they should in my opinion stay on a small amount of antipsychotics if they have schizophrenia and sometimes bipolar.Relapse is inevitable if they stop the treatment. It works even better in depression but it helps only about 50% of those with bipolar.Niacinamide is useful in many cases- niacin causes too much hot flushes, although long-acting no-flush varieties are available too but expensive.I do tests for histamine, kryptopyrroles in urine, essential fatty acids, hair analysis, ceruloplamin, copper, zinc and some others.I have found the information I got on CD by Dr Willliam Walsh Ph.D. of Pfeiffer Center (www.hriptc.org) in Chicago very useful. I have some further details in www.omega3.20megsfree.com

Oddly I have read that a bad LSD trip(which may be similar to schiz) can be aborted by large doses of niacin so it must do something. You have to be careful with niacin if you have liver issues tho so research that.

Thank you one and all for your feedback.
I am praying my sister will try the niacin.
My gut tells me this could make all the difference.
