I am a family doctor in Ireland who is interested in nutrition as an addition to and not a replacement for standard treatment in mental illness. In some but not all cases it works well and some get back to what appears to be full health, although they should in my opinion stay on a small amount of antipsychotics if they have schizophrenia and sometimes bipolar.Relapse is inevitable if they stop the treatment. It works even better in depression but it helps only about 50% of those with bipolar.Niacinamide is useful in many cases- niacin causes too much hot flushes, although long-acting no-flush varieties are available too but expensive.I do tests for histamine, kryptopyrroles in urine, essential fatty acids, hair analysis, ceruloplamin, copper, zinc and some others.I have found the information I got on CD by Dr Willliam Walsh Ph.D. of Pfeiffer Center (www.hriptc.org) in Chicago very useful. I have some further details in www.omega3.20megsfree.com
