L-phenylalanine - who's tried it?

Posted by emme on July 17, 2005, at 15:19:05

Hi All,

Has anyone tried L-phenylalanine?
How much did you take?
What did it do to/for you?

Thanks,
emme

I took 500 or 1000 mgs. It makes you feel a bit intense. Not really pleasant or unpleasant. If you take heaps, above a couple of grams, you can feel your blood pressure go up. Well, mine did.

Declan, thanks for your comment. I'm at day five at 1000 - 1500 mg. It doesn't seem to be cutting through the brain fog, drowsiness, or apathy. At the same time, I'm alittle jittery. This is not looking promising.

Do not take it if you have anxiety problems. It can raise blood presure by activating the sympathic nervous system. It consricts your blood vesels.Parasympathic nervous sys. reduces blood pressure. They work together. It activates the left forebrain.People with Bi-polar may become manic.

Your experience is what I'd expect from it. I've never been very good at clearing up brain fog in particular. Drowsiness and apathy might be easier to convert into anxiety. I think I know how to do that. :)

I've tried all sorts of things for brain fog. Let's see.....
aniracetam....half(not full) dose was OK for clarity.
centrophenoxine....too much for me.
DMAE...haven't tried it, might be worth a look.
vinpocetine...might be worth a look, improves memory.
deprenyl...more energy, dunno about brain fog.
Hydergine...slightly euphoric, no help for BF.

Getting a good nights sleep is important, but I haven't had much success with that either.

Brain fog could be caused by a shortage of atch.Brain cannot work without it.

Noradrenaline may cause panic in some individuals but a short supply of active forebrain noradrenaline can severely hamper concentration.

This is why Tyrosine is often effective in the augmentation of psychostimulants in ADD.

Would tyrosine be expected to have similar effects as L-phenylalanine, given that they're part of the same biochemical pathway?

Yes. There seems to be a very fine line between adding enough energy to be alert and productive and going into overstimulation.

I'll try to learn about them and give them some thought.

I used to take it. It caused: good days, overstimulated days, and depressed days. It seeme to make me cycle up and down.

I'm working on it too. And not having enough success.

And how does one increased ACTH?

I like l-tyrosinbe better. At first it was a bit harsh, but I take it as a cocktail with Strattera and they balance out each other nicely.

I took l-phenylalanine, and like others, found it didn't really take away the brain fog- it just made me jittery.

In answer to the ACTH question. No, actually one doesn't need much ACTH at all, but its presence is necessary. ACTH stimulates cortisol, and they work in a feedback fashion. ACTH is implicated quite a bit in the anxiety/stress response.

It's norepiniephrine and to a certain extent acetylcholine that fuel the thinking mind. Dopamine feeds norepinephrine, which helps the frontal lobes function properly, and help with attention, concentration and focus.

I think I like l-tyrosine better, because it's a direct precursor to l-dopa, that in turn becomes dopamine and then norepinephrine.

Some say that l-phenylalanine is better, bcause some goes to dopamine and some to PEA (the "feel good" chemical) I personally didn't get much out of it except jitters and a still foggy brain.

If I didn't have Strattera to mellow out the effects, I'd probably get the l-tyrosine 500 mg tablets and cut it in half. L-tyrosine packs a kick by itself....

Link,
You responded to this ad a few years ago regarding l-phenylananine. Does your comments suggest it's better to augment the Tyrosine with psychostimulants instead of the lphenylananine? I take adderall and ritalin but still in a unfocused semi-stupor, sluggish state. I was hoping the phenylananine would help activate the stimulants.

Now that's funny you mentioned you liked the l-tyrosine better than the l-phenylalanine. I spoke with the pharmacist the other day and she said it breaks down to l-tyrosine. So esentially it has both in it. My question is to all. Does it work well with a stimulant or overcompensate? I take adderallxr and it keeps popping out. My pdoc adding ritalin to the adderall and I told him I wanted to try and just add L-phenylalanine with the adderallxr. Does anyone have any suggestions?
