Supplements increasing anxiety/depression

Posted by 4WD on July 23, 2005, at 19:27:23

I went to an acupuncture doctor and he prescribed some supplements for me. Every time I take them, the next day I feel so horrible. More anxious, more depressed. Some of the ingredients are: bovine ovary extract, bovine adrenal PMG extract, bovine pituitary PMG extract, bovine thyroid PMG extract, bovine orchic Cytosol extract, bovine spleen, bovine liver, etc.

Can it be these supplements? It has to be. I tried it twice and the same thing happened both times.

Any input, please.

Marsha

I presume he gave you some of these supplements to support the adrenal glands, though I don't see anything on the net to support their use in anxiety states or if they exacerbate them. I can think of better things to try first, at least something with some research behind it.

I don't suffer from depression so I'm not at liberty to give you much advice on that. In terms of anxiety and panic then I suffer quite badly from that. There are many supplements that are cited as being helpful to relieve anxiety. I'm finding Omega Oils and Lecithin pretty good at the moment. I have tried a variety of other supplements like Theanine, Taurine, Phenibut, Passiflora and none really hit the spot in relieving anxiety for me, at least nothing as effective as a benzo drug like Valium.

I believe anxiety and depression (certainly in depression) have a biological cause, but also how you think also affects them and can make them worse. They feed each other, learning to relax everyday is important.

I use EFT http://www.emofree.com/ which is free to learn, extremely simple and works for me.(just involves tapping on a few points on the body) I believe it uses some classical acupuncture points.

Also the field of NLP has some powerful techniques for helping you to change your thoughts and rid yourself of anxiety, this takes longer to learn, but I feel it's worth doing. Paul McKenna's Success for Life is a good CD set that I'm about 1/3 of the way through.

I hope this post has been of some use.

Thank you, Nolvas.

I talked to a pharmacist tonight and he particularly pointed out that the adrenal extract and thyroid extract would not be good for someone suffering from extreme anxiety.

I've tried some of the supplements you mentioned and also niacinamide and evening primrose oil. The latter two helped a tiny bit but made me tired and lethargic. I haven't tried lecithin. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll also check out the EFT site.

Thanks,
Marsha

I have Nicianamide too, it's supposed to be more effective used as a combo with Inositol and Gaba, there are some supplements with these three together. TwinLab's Gaba Plus is one such supplement. I haven't tried it.

I do plan to try a decent quality Kava Kava supplement, so far I haven't found one that does anything. KonaKavaFarm looks like the place to try.

Hi Marsha,

How long did the improvement last after the dexamethasone suppression test?

Lately I've been reading about EFT. Do you think it has lasting effects? Do you know of any independent research that has investigated EFT? thanks!

warm regards ~Jake

It's hard to say. I had two fine days and it might have continued longer except that Hurricane Dennis starting heading directly for my house and it freaked me out so much I had a pretty severe anxiety relapse. (I've never been scared of hurricanes until last year when Ivan flooded our house and we were out of it for eight months and lost a bunch of stuff and had to move a bunch of times and I just got overwhelmed.) And that was all happening while I was going off Effexor.

Anyway, Dennis went west of us and everything was fine. I've been thinking of maybe trying the dexamethasone thing again, though. It's weird, I didn't feel particularly better while taking the dex. It was just after they gave me the drug to suppress cortisol (I think that's what it was - the CRH part of the test) and I felt horrible for a few hours and then, when it wore off, I felt great. For what that's worth.

How can you tolerate 80 mg of Celexa? I can oly take 10mg before my neck gets so stiff and painful I can't turn my head.

Marsha
