Black currant seed oil

Posted by Sarah T. on July 20, 2005, at 22:16:53

Does anyone here take black currant seed oil rather than evening primrose oil as a source of GLA? I read that evening primrose oil might have some estrogenic properties and that women at high risk for breast cancer should avoid it, so until I learn more about it, I'd prefer to get extra GLA from some other source. I also want to stay away from borage oil due to some potential problems associated with that. That leaves black currant seed oil. If anyone here uses it, how is it working out for you? How much do you take?

Hi,

I've taken it. Actually I've taken all three of them and I haven't noticed any difference. But GLA is something I took because I thought it would be good for me. I'm sure it did do some good things but I haven't really been able to say that I see noticable results from it though.

LOOPS would probably be a better person to answer this one. She is more aware of how these things effect her.

K

Hi Sarah -

I haven't tried black currant seed oil yet, but am sure I'll get round to it at some point!

I really wouldn't be surprised if these things go beyond simply having an effect due to the GLA content. For instance, I notice more of an effect on PMT from EPO, and more of an anti-inflammatory effect on eczema from borage oil. Those are the only ones I've tried.

I'm wary of water retention maybe caused by too much EPO in the past taken throughout my cycle, but at the same time my skin really was in good nick (was taking fish oil, EPO AND borage oil). HOwever I did have a bit of water-weight retention at this point and was 'getting down' sometimes. This could have been due to something else altogether, but funnily enough once I dropped the omega-6 for awhile my spirits rose once more.

I think it was just the omega-3:6 ratio as I really need some GLA in addition to fish oil on a daily basis, or I get too 'up'. Lecithin fares in the equation as well. Balancing.

I'm thinking about trying to reduce my intake of fish oil/GLA right now as it is quite high, but then inflammation is in check as is depression so maybe I shouldn't reduce it too much (just worried about depleting vitamin E and who knows what else?). Anxiety still comes and goes, but that is due to me being on my own all day rather than biochemical I think.

How much GLA does black currant see oil have?

Loops

Thank you, KaraS and LOOPS (nm)
