Many supplements are going to be banned in the UK

Posted by ed_uk on July 16, 2005, at 23:25:37

Food supplement and vitamin restrictions to go ahead, following European court ruling

Plans to ban certain food supplements and place upper limits on vitamin doses in supplements are to go ahead in August.

Campaigners opposed to the changes have been seeking a High Court order against UK legislative changes to implement restrictions arising from European law. However, they are now likely to lose their case because the European court has ruled that an EU directive on food supplements was properly made (PJ, 7 February 2004, p148).

The Alliance for Natural Health estimates that the ban will affect 300 out of 450 currently available natural ingredients and will result in up to 5,000 products disappearing from shelves.

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s science adviser, John Clements, said the Society welcomed the moves to ensure that the products available are of sufficient quality and safe to use. However, he added: “The directive imposes an upper limit on the strength of vitamins but the Society’s view is that these limits should be based on scientific evidence.”

It really does suck. So does anyone know what supplements will be affected? SAM-e, L-tyrosine, etc? Why are they restricting them in the first place, when surely people have been taking them all this time with no problems?? I read somewhere (In Patrick's holford's book, 'the optimum nutition bible') that the likeihood of you overdosing on natural supplements is LESS than being in a shark attack.

Anyway, Ed hang in there with the studies - I was going to drop out because of depression etc, but my uni was really really understanding and let me take off a semester. I then retook the year. Are you studying to be a pharmacist? My friend did pharmacay at Bradford uni and now she's fully qualified, earning about a squillion pounds a year..... unfortunately I'm too ashamed to fully admit the extent of my depression and therefore I can't utilise her knowledge! anyway i get a feeling that you are studying something pharmacy related, I wish there were more healthcare professinals as knowledgeable as you about pysch meds. The GP i saw today was shockingly unknowledgeable. eh well.

That is riduculous. It is bad enough that you guys can't seem to get access to beneficial psychotropic meds, now you will not even have access to a wide variety of natural supplements that may help to alleviate depression and anxiety, or at least help to augment a med that is not providing sufficient response.

I don't understand why the government doesn't invest in putting in place some kind of regulatory framework to ensure the public has access to quality supplements that meet standards' requirements. It seems a little short-sighted and counter productive, I would think.

Its a conspiracy with the FDA to increase drug profits. They'll probably pull things like ginger root, and turmeric which undoubtedly cut into sales of prescription anti-inflamitories.

Thats pathetic.

Is this the Codex thing?? I don't know what it stands for. Supposed to be coming to Australia. Is it a move against health food shops and the supplements they sell?
I imagine those things will still be available from a prescriber, who may be a nutritional doctor. They want a professional in there between you and the supplements. Or is it worse than that? They can't get rid of herbalists. I hope.
They closed Pan Pharmaceuticals down here for that reason, it seemed. Half the supplements in the health food shops had to be returned.

I would think so. It seems that FDA, in cahoots with the drug companies, wants to regulate everything. I can see where there will be enough of a fight to prevent it here though, but who knows.
