Am trying Rhodiola - comments anyone?

Posted by kath on July 13, 2005, at 10:03:38

Have been taking it for about a week. The first week I was away at a cottage, so thought my lack of obsessing/worrying was a result.

Now I'm home for half a week & realize that I am definitely more calm & it's almost like the 'receptor' for worrying thoughts is not open for receiving them!! Or it acknowledges them, then bounces them away.

I also notice that when I wake in the morning, I don't have that horrible "sense of impending doom" feeling.

My one concern is (& I must call my pharmacist & see if he knows) - I take Celexa. I know you're not supposed to take St. John's Wort if you're on Celexa. I've never read anything about Rhodiola with Celexa.

I did a 'search' here on Rhodiola but felt really overwhelmed at reading all that material!!

Thx for any comments. Kath

I think rhodiola's great and would take it all the time if it wasn't for insomnia, with or without it. But it did make my sleep lighter in any doseage. It's prosexual, makes me feel tingly. I suppose that's the dopamine angle. If you sleep OK and rhodiola doesn't make it worse it should be OK, I guess, but I've never taken Celexa or an SSRI.
For a few days I felt really euphoric taking deprenyl and rhodiola. But there again sleep was the problem.

I tried rhodiola several years ago, but only for a couple weeks. I don't remember details, but I do remember that I liked it, all except for a frequent urination side effect. I think I remember it worked fast, like in a day or two. I think the only reason I stopped taking it was because I didn't have the money to order more. I took it along with prozac and zyprexa. Herbs can be added to meds with careful dosing. Right now I take st johns wort with prozac and zyprexa, but only in a dosage of 300mg every other day. I kind of like the idea of rhodiola. Glad you brought it up.

Hi - thanks for your replies.
Still haven't asked my pharmacist (it obviously isn't helping my procrastination!! lol)

Declan I haven't heard of the other thing you mentioned. What is that?

It affects my sleep in a good way - if I wake up & it feels like about 3 or 4 a.m., it turns out to be acout 1:30!!! - bonus.

No frequent peeing as of yet either.

I'm pretty excited about this!!!!!!!!!!! I'm really feeling 'way less obsessive/worrying. I'm almost afraid to "get into" feeling excited - almost!

I have been gradually cutting back on my Celexa. I was taking 30mg, took 25mg for a couple of days & last nite took 20mg. I think I'll leave it at that for a while & see how things go!!

:-) Kath

I've found that Rhodiola works. I use it on high stress days. It being an adaptigen I don't take it everyday because I have problems with insomnia. But maybe it doesn't cause a problem there. I tend to switch in and out with these kind of plant compounds because of the poop-out problem that sometimes crops up. I've read that it affects MAO levels, maybe Linkage knows something.

Thanks for the reminder!
I have some in my cupboard that I've never used, and I think I'll try it.

I've got some NOW brand rhodiola, but it's got twice the recommended dosage in one capsule.
Too afraid to try it.
So nice to read a positive reaction to an alternative med!

I'm hesitant to make recommedations, keeping in mind that body chemistries differ regarding to all "alternative" supplements. Also I think there's a wide variety available in the potency of the non-regulated supplements. Anyway here's one to look at, Nature's Plus, 2.8% salidroside, 70% polyphenols. Says "prescription quality" whatever that means.

I was using Ameriden Rosavin. A US company.

You were asking what deprenyl was? Selegeline/deprenyl is a MAO B inhibitor, used for Parkinsons disease and neuroprotection. Feels like Rhodiola.

what's a standard dose. Ok fine, therapeutic (usually higher)? And how many times a day?
I saw it was recommended for sexual enhancement. Had no idea it might help me wake up in the morning w/o obsessing and panicking.

I usually take 500 mg once a day as needed. Other people take more, like in advance of a high stress event.

Here an article on dosage from the smartdrugs.com

---------------------------
Dosage and Toxicity

In the two double-blind clinical trials, the dose of a standardized Rhodiola rosea extract ranged from 100-170 mg per day. The content of rosavin consumed in these daily doses is approximately 3.6-6.14 mg. The therapeutic dose of available Rhodiola rosea preparations will vary depending on degree of standardization; however, for chronic administration rosavin content within the above range seems prudent. This would suggest a dose of approximately 360-600 mg Rhodiola rosea daily of an extract standardized for one-percent rosavin, 180-300 mg of an extract standardized for two-percent rosavin, or the dose of between 100-170 mg for an extract standardized for 3.6-percent rosavin. As an adaptogen, chronic administration is normally begun several weeks prior to a period of expected increased physiological, chemical, or biological strain, and continued throughout the duration of the challenging event or activity. When using Rhodiola rosea as a single dose for acute purposes (e.g., for an exam or athletic competition), the suggested dose is three times the dose used for chronic supplementation.

The Russian approach to long-term supplementation with adaptogens generally calls for repeating cycles characterized by short periods of adaptogen administration, followed by an interval with no supplementation.26 Rhodiola rosea has been administered for periods ranging from as little as one day (acute administration) up to four months. Until more specific information is available, a dosing regime following the established patterns used with other plant adaptogens, with periodic intervals of abstinence, seems warranted when Rhodiola rosea is being used chronically.

At the doses administered in the clinical trials, a complete absence of all side effects has been reported. However, preliminary clinical feedback indicates that at doses of 1.5-2.0 grams and above of Rhodiola rosea extract standardized for two-percent rosavin, some individuals might experience an increase in irritability and insomnia within several days. It is possible that other physiological parameters that benefit from a lower dose of Rhodiola rosea extract might be exacerbated by a dose that is inappropriately high and/or sustained for prolonged periods of time.

Hi buddhi
I took 1 or 2 caps /d. Deprenyl potentiated it nicely. When a friend tried it it lightened her sleep when she took 2/d, and she sleeps really well, maybe too well. So that might be a potential problem. Innovative shrinks are using it as an adjunct to treatment for depression.

It started working straight away. Like it doesn't hit you over the head but it's noticeable. Supposed to do 100 and 1 good things including raising the levels of beta-endorphin. If/when I get my sleep worked out I want to try deprenyl (1 or 2mg/d) with it again. I was very impressed when I last tried it.

Deprenyl and drug tests - watchout

In reply to Re: too Declan question about ameriden rosavin, posted by Declan on July 30, 2005, at 16:48:27

This isn't about Rhodiola, tho I've tried it with no discernable effects. About Deprenyl. Watch out if you have to take a drug test for work or anything else. A random test showed I had metabolites for methamphetamine in my urine and I don't do that nasty stuff.

Turns out that deprenyl, because of it's action on dopamine, does metabolize into substances that raise flags for meth. I had to bring in my dep bottle and the articles to prove it before I was allowed back to work.

Yeah, I'm glad we don't have that here....yet.

What with the way things are these days maybe it's here already though.

Doesn't deprenyl metabolise into l-amphetamine to some extent?
