Dairy products a no-no with tryptophan??

Posted by jasmineneroli on February 15, 2005, at 23:46:16

I've just picked a repeat Rx of Tryptophan.
This time (unlike other times), the "patient counselling" sheet, that accompanied it, advised against taking with dairy products. The prescribing advice has always recommended taking with food (no info on WHICH foods, however) but now it's added the "no dairy product" advisory.

It's my understanding that tryptophan should not be taken with protein, better with carbs. I have found it to be fine taken alone. I don't get stomach upsets from trypt. which seems to be the fear of the pharmacists!

Anyone know why dairy products could be a problem?

Thanks.
Jas

I don't know of any reason why you should specifically avoid dairy when taking tryp, I think it's probably because like you said, there are competing amino acids in milk. So if you take them at the same time you are blunting the potency of the tryp.

Hmmmmm, well if they are warning about competing amino's they ought to simply say "Do not take with protein"!
I sometimes wonder where they get their info from!

I cannot conceive of why they say not to take it with dairy. Bizarre.

Agreed! Next time I get the script filled, I'll ask the pharmacist for the rationale for the dairy warning.
