therapeutic sleep deprivation with lithium

Anyone tried sleep deprivation as a therapy? Apparently lithium (and other agents) can improve response and prevent relapse after recovery sleep.

I do know someone. He became a chronic insomniac for 10 years

Hi,

Yes, I will use partial sleep or total sleep deprivation, on occasion, if my depression gets bad. It does relieve depression (for me, at least) but isn't conducive to being incredibly functional the next day. Lithium can help make the effect last a few days.

Sleep deprivation is a different feel from any antidepressant I have used. It can make the world seem fresh and new again. Nice while it lasts - who knows what the mechanism is.

Agree, have tried it in the past, although never with lithium....I'm hoping to extend the effect. It's a strange feeling as it's not as though I go back to my previous state before depression, I just feel different.

Is that resulting from a single night of tsd or repeated treatment?

Repeated treatment against his will. Pretty ugly if you ask me.

It can be a form of torture. He didn't recover from it.

Some research into sleep deprivation suggest it is the build up of adenosine (sleep promoting chemical) that helps supress overactive limbic function. I'm sure there are other mechanisms as well.

I don't always lapse the next day, sometimes I get a few days out of it.

Obviously it should never be used on somebody against their will. I'm not sure what context Lamdage is referring to.

I agree. He said it was in a hospital setting.

No, I wouldn't do that. Personally, lithium has caused some major depressive rebound with me, and I have had to lower it's dose (lithium) and crank up the antidepressant and anti-anxiety meds dose. I have done a bit of research on disassociation and lithium, as that seems to be what I have experienced when my lithium dose went to 900 mg per day. It is like this huge wad of dysphoric derealization just side swapped me in the head. Anyhow...just my thoughts....
