Doxycycline is often chosen for Lyme Disease. It can take a few months to see results if you have had an infection for awhile. You might even feel worse before you feel better. This is attributed by some to a die-off of bacteria and the toxins that are released. This is referred to as the Herxheimer reaction.

An interesting alternative would be minocycline, a drug that also treats Lyme Disease. However, it does an array of different things in the brain that are unrelated to its antibiotic properties. It really does help some people with depression, and is thought to work by affecting glutamate activity and reducing brain inflammation. I tried it. The stuff works. Unfortunately, some people develop hyperpigmentation - a discoloration of the skin and gums. I had to stop taking minocycline after 1 1/2 years because a dark discoloration developed on my feet and shins. These discolorations might fade, but aren't always reversible.

Me, too.

Besides the logic to be found in desperation, are there any specific reasons for you to believe that you might have a brain infection?

The following is a lot to read, but maybe you can find things that help you come to a conclusion as to whether you should pursue looking at infection as being a contributor to your condition(s).

Dr. Bransfield is a smart doctor who has a talent for thinking "outside the box" and getting results.

I am not familiar with this. Can you briefly describe what it's all about?

NMDA receptors are set up to use glutamate. Glutamate is a neurotransmitter being looked at more closely for various mental illnesses, including depression and OCD. You might want to do a quick search for schizophrenia and glutamate or NMDA.

I took a look on Google. The full name of the condition you are looking at is actually "NMDA receptor antibody encephalitis". It is an autoimmune response targeting the NMDA receptor. It is not something you can cure with an antibiotic.

This is the Wiki entry:

Why do you think you have a brain infection. Having had a brain infection (meningitis) and a friend who had encephalitis, I can tell you that you would know if you had a brain infection and it would be a severe medical emergency. There are other, non-infectious, brain diseases. Have you talked to a neurologist?

Scott was also on Biaxin XL for two years for lymes. Three months on and three off. Was pulsed. Shortly after it was discontinued is when lost taste & smell. And two years later still had 6 positive bands for the infection. Doxycycline if first med to try with lymes and it does work. Phillipa

minocycline works for negative symptoms but is dangerous at the beginning, then it cures you but with anti biotic side effects

Wow. That's horrible stuff. How does one get their Doc to test them for this? How many thousands of people are suffering, misdiagnosed and drugged up?
