2 antipsychotics...

Posted by Christ_empowered on August 22, 2014, at 12:03:03

..sometimes, I take 2-6mgs Risperdal at night on top of my 30 Abilify. My shrink seems unconcerned. Then again..he's public health. APs are apparently ALWAYS the answer!

What's the safety like? Would I be better off with one AP at a higher dose, like Seroquel XR or something? Are some combos better than others?

A friend of mine with schizoaffective disorder did not do well until Saphris (asenapine) was added to the Navane (thiothixene) she has been taking. Of course, the question remains as to whether or not the Navane is still necessary, but I don't think it makes sense for her to experiment at this point. She now has a job and is going to college. She experiences no side effects.

Antipsychotics are far from being identical to each other. They can differ greatly in their properties beyond D2 antagonism. Perhaps you need all of the mechanisms that can only be found in the complementary effects of two antipsychotics taken at the same time.

What are your major concerns regarding the taking of multiple antipsychotics? What evidence have you encountered that would lead you to have these concerns?

You might want to experiment by trialing different antipsychotics by adding them one at a time to the Abilify you are taking. By continuing the Abilify, you will maintain the therapeutic effect and stability it offers you. If one of the antipsychotics added produces robust improvements, you should probably continue taking both drugs at the same time for awhile, and then attempt to gradually discontinue the Abilify. If you deteriorate upon the discontinuation of Abilify, then I guess you will have no better choice than to commit to taking multiple antipsychotics - at least until medical science discovers another treatment that would serve you better.

i don't think it's gonna cause a problem, abilify works a bit diffrent than previous risperdal, seroquel, it doesnt block just dopamine, some other receptors too and it's not as potent as others....yet it's vary good med for depression, have no idea why.....

i've been on geodon 160mg and zyprexa 10mg....in 09, docctor was doing something similr to the combo im on right tnow, he thought my ADD was manic, and used heavy doses of antipsychotics, i was spaced out....calm, some of urge to get things done was blunted, but i didnt have TD, just signifantly altered in dopamine decrease

it's not gonna do anything, because i real doctor should know which does cause TD, only time i ever had symptoms was on zyprexa at 30mg

geodon does not cause TD much because it's newer....

you may want to ask about geodon, less side effects, risperdal has a side effect where it makes guys have increased prolactin levels....

ask about geodon.....

I say stick with what works! Atleast you know what will happen. You could end up having a bad reaction to something new. Like seroquel.

Are you trying to get off abilify? For a generic? Then you could try it. May or may not work. I don't think seroquel will be anything like abilify though. Just a guess, I could be wrong. Just like sls said they are all different.

I wouldn't change either, if it works and you are satisfied.

Maybe you can lower it in the long run.
