How does adderall ir compare to xr?

Posted by Goldengirl on January 30, 2014, at 12:11:12

So, I am taking Prozac and Adderall, I started with 20mg IR, and it was effective but didn't last long so I was put on 20 mg xr. My doc assured me it would be the same, just longer lasting, but it doesn't feel the same. Since the switch I'm noticing my ADD symptoms much more than with the IR? Whats the deal? Should I ask for a higher dose?

I liked the IR better. Cheaper (or was back when xr was brand, anyway). The IR hits instantly and lasts a while (Adderall is designed to last a while...that's why they have multiple forms of amphetamine in there) and then wears off.

Could you get a dosage increase? Like, 20 IR AM, 10 IR afternoon? That's not unreasonable. I used to take 30xr AM then a 10 IR before lunch.

Good luck!

With Adderall, I'm not sure you'll want to actually straight up ask for a higher dose. You know your doctor better than us, but some doctors are likely to feel uneasy with prescribing more Adderall than usual, especially when asked to. I'm sure you're aware of this, since it is Amphetamine/Speed.

But just tell your doc about it not working as well, and let him decide what he wants to do. At least that's what I'd do.
