Suggestions for sleep / Geodon

Posted by Sheilac on October 22, 2013, at 16:33:09

Still having problems with sleep.

80mg of a Geodon helps with stability, 60mg less so, but no sleep! Plus the higher the dose, the hungrier I get!

40mg and I sleep like a baby, but doesn't help so much with stability, helps more with depression.

If I take vistiril or atarax (an old antihistamine), they make me hungry the next day. Notice how hunger is a problem with me? I've gained 25 lbs!

I already take melatonin (3 -6 mg), but maybe Benadryl would help without causing hunger! I'm not sure why I'm so hungry, probably something to do with histamine receptors, I guess.

But, I'm feeling less stable on the lower dose of Geodon. I need the stability, but I MUST get sleep!

Any suggestions for sleep?

Thanks

Don't want to sound mean but can you just not eat more than you need? Sometimes water can fill a person up. Also low calorie snacks such are raw veggies? Used to love them till lost taste and smell. Phillipa

You're right, Phillipa, I do just need to eat less and drink more water. Sometimes, believe it or not, the Buspar helps with my appetite, but I think my doc made a mistake in my Rx this last time. She went from 5mg 3x a day to 15mg 3 times a day (which could also be making me feel a little hypomanic! I think the new pharmacy I used made a mistake! Won't use them again.

Also, I'm on anti inflammatories for my broken foot (no exercise!). The anti inflammatories tend to tear up my tummy, I think making me feel hungry. I just realized this last nigh. Too much acid. Plus, the no exercise, just walking around burns calories and that's hard to do in a cast!

I'll work on it. :)

However, last night I took my melatonin & Klonopin 2 hours early (1 hour wasn't doing it) and slept like a baby. So taking it waaaay early does help me unwind and relax enough to sleep.

I guess you just have to try everything.

If 80mg of Geodon is what keeps you the most stable, I would stay with that dose.

I like 25-50mg Benedryl for sleep. Works better than Ambien for me!

Not sure if I mentioned it in an earlier post, but something that really bothers me about the higher doses of Geodon, is that it makes me hungry. I'm having trouble sticking with 80mg due to the increase in hunger.

I want to be stable, but I don't want to be fat and I feel like I shouldn't have to choose between stable & fat. Just not fair.

Any suggestions - other than diet and exercise? Kind of hard to diet when you want to eat everything in sight. Dieting requires some amount of willpower. Ugh.

When do you take your Geodon? I hear it is both activating and sedating. I am considering a trial of it in the AM

I take at dinner, as you have to take it with food. At first I was taking 80mg and it didn't help with sleep at all. My doc really wants me to get sleep, so she dropped me back to my old faithful (took it for a long time) of 40mg and I sleep like a rock!

If I had to take it during the day, I'd have to take a really high dose, as 20-40mg makes it impossible to stay awake, with a ton of coffee - which defeats the purpose. I've met very few people that can take it during the day and stay awake!

What dose are you on? Are you taking it twice a day? Any other meds you're taking?

I'm also on Trileptal.
