Celexa side effects different this time around

Posted by joe schmoe on July 13, 2012, at 6:43:57

I have been on (mostly) and off celexa / citalopram for the past ten years. I've gone off it (with the usual unpleasant dizziness/brain shocks) a number of times, and then back on it later, and the side effects have always been limited to the common sexual and appetite/weight gain ones.

Last time I went on it in 2010 after giving time release Wellbutrin a try, the citalopram gave me terrible onset anxiety for a full three weeks, which was unusual for me, but it eventually settled down to the sexual and weight gain stuff. I went off it in 2011 to try Viibryd for six months, which I ended in December.

Six weeks ago I decided to go back on citalopram. Not only did it have a long period of onset anxiety, along with some strange sensations in my head, but it has given me terrible insomnia. I decided to try lowering it from 20 to 10 to no avail. Even at 10 mg I can't sleep through the night and wake up constantly throughout the night and spend long periods trying to get back to sleep. I think I am going to have to go off it, this is really intolerable.

Has anyone else had the experience of a familiar medicine giving different (and bad) side effects than they have experienced in the past? I wonder if it could have something to do with the Aurobindo generic I am taking, but that seems unlikely.

Where I used to get side effects from beginning a med it seems that I no longer do. So I seem to have the opposite effect. I recently stopped the baby dose of lexapro was on for two years. Figured why take it? Are you depressed. Male? by posting name? Phillipa

I suspect that the leading cause might be the generic manufacturer. I have experienced noticeable changes when changing generic forms of citalopram. I have always done well on the generic from Amneal (which was available from Walgreens). I had considerable adverse effects when I tried a version from Torrent.

Amneal is also what I have mostly taken in the past. The only reason I stopped taking it is because Walgreen's generic clonazepam was terrible (Mylan) so I started going to CVS to get Teva.

Now that I think back on it, the last two times I started Celexa I had terrible experiences and they were both using CVS generics (Aurobindo).

Well, I decided to try getting another brand. Walmart and Target both carry Indian brands as well (Dr Reddy's and Torrent). So I called CVS and asked them to order some Sandoz and fill my next refill (ahead of time, no insurance to help). I picked it up tonight.

It was EXACTLY the same as the Aurobindo. Same color, same shape, etc. I stared in disbelief and they brought out the Sandoz bottle to show me.

So I went home, took out my remaining Aurobindo citaloprams and compared them to the Sandoz ones. They were IDENTICAL. Same markings on the front and back, everything. The description on the labels was even the same, for the color, shape, markings etc. Only difference on the label was the supposed manufacturer.

I went back to CVS and they were gracious enough, when presented with the evidence (I brought my Aurobindo bottle with me as well) to refund my money and transfer the prescription to Walgreen's where I could get Amneal. The other brands CVS could order were Indian (Torrent, Dr Reddy's). I asked about Greenstone and the pharmacist said that according to the computer, they were discontinuing their product.

Anyway just wanted to give a big warning to anyone thinking of getting Sandoz generics. They are apparently outsourcing them to Aurobindo and not putting it anywhere on the label (I looked at the Sandoz bottle label and it said the pills were manufactured by some other firm in New Jersey, it never mentioned Aurobindo).

Here's hoping the Amneals work like they have in the past.

Just posting this to make sure I get followups, I forgot to click the "notify" box in my last post.

Just took my first half of an Amneal 20mg citalopram.

Not heard of which one?

Sandoz has been around for a long time in one form or another, originally as a Swiss company, started in 1886. That was why I thought I could trust the name.

Aurobindo is one of the new mega generic manufacturers in India.

Just curious about the "strange sensations" in your head that you get. Are they annoying? I am just trying to figure out mine, and i am also taking celexa. Thx

Just ran out of Amneal citalopram the other day and started on my reserves of Aurobindo citalopram.

Woke up with night sweats last night. Hadn't had any alcohol either.

Sigh.
