New book about Botox relieving depression

Posted by Hugh on February 12, 2013, at 1:29:32

Depressed patients who receive Botox injections to paralyze the frown muscles between their eyebrows frequently experience an improvement in mood that lasts for months.

From the USA Today article:

Though his study was not definitive in saying who might benefit most from the treatment, Wollmer says in his experience, it works best in people who have an agitated form of depression and a lot of activity in their frown-line area.

RESULTS: Ten depressed patients were treated with botulinum toxin A, and 9 of 10 patients were no longer depressed 2 months after treatment. The tenth patient had an improvement in mood.

Hugh I read about this a while ago. I didn't as yet read your links but didn't they feel that possibly the difference in appearance made a big difference? Seems botox is even being used for twitching eyes. For those with autoimmune disorders even thyroid personally I'd use caution as it's a foreign substance. Now for reading the article. Which I'm betting has more current information. And thanks for the links!!! Phillipa

Some people have speculated that by improving someone's appearance with Botox, they'll feel better about themselves and be happier as a result. And some have speculated that by removing a depressed person's frowning countenance with Botox, other people will start treating them better, which will cause the Botoxed depressed person to be less depressed. There's probably something to these arguments, but a much stronger case can be made that by preventing depressed people from frowning, it prevents them from feeling so negative.

Hugh yes that is what I also read. If only the treatments didn't have to frequently be repeated and costly it would be fabulous. Phillipa

I'd like to see a randomised, double blind, placebo controlled trial of botox before I started having the injections. Plus, I dont fancy having to look like a freak

It looks like it would be $300-400 every 3-6 months.

If the injections are limited to just between the eyebrows, it might not look that bad. If it does look bad, at least it will go away -- after six months or so. I'd definitely try Botox for my depression, if I had more frown-line activity. But this is based on my self-assessment. People who know me might disagree with me. I gave a friend of mine who has a frown on his face most of the time, and is deeply depressed, an article about Botox and depression. After he read it, he said, "I find this very interesting. But I rarely frown." He said this with a fierce frown on his face.

Hugh had this horrible line on top of nose between eyes when had some money I had it surgically removed. I don't have forehead from lines. Lines call marionette I do have. But they are from nose to mouth. Pricing doesn't sound bad. Phillipa

Hugh, I've been seeing Dr. Fruitman for Ketamine and as it turns out, he does Botox for the reasons you wrote. I've had it before (I frown a lot) and it looks and feels great!

thanks for the info.

Dr. Fruitman needs to start cloning himself. I'm glad to hear the ketamine is working for you.

Thanks, Hugh. I'm taking it day by day though, because I'm so fearful the other shoe will drop at any given moment (my depression slams me out of nowhere).

Perhaps we should consult with him about a franchise? We can open up happy clinics with frownless patients all over the world!
