How long for Seroquel to work?

Posted by mogger on August 13, 2012, at 15:54:33

Hi there,

I went on Seroquel 50mg for two days, 100mg for two days, and now am on my second day of 150mg where my doctor wants to start me at for a depression augmenter added to my cocktail. So far I haven't really felt too much from the Seroquel and I am wondering if I should have felt something already? I know having been on Zyprexa it immediately kicks in. Thanks for your thoughts,

Mogger

Seroquel kicks in immediately with its sedative properties. As for its antidepressant qualities, I would wait a week or so before you saw results. You're also on a very low dose.

Thanks Eric,

Do you mean wait a week longer than I already have meaning give it a week being at 150mg before feeling anything? Thanks for your help. Yes the sedative properties kicked right in!

I was recently on Risperidone (another AP) and I felt something the next day at half the prescribed dose (.25). Too bad it didn't last that long.

If you have already been on 150 mg dose, you may want to consider doubling the dose. 150 mg is too small a dose to exert any antidepressant effect.

Small bonus at the higher dose: it becomes less sedating and more activating due to its effect on the NET.

I didn't know that as once took 12.5mg and my head dropped in my lap. Phillipa

Thanks everyone. I have one more question if you don't mind and that is is it unheard of to have some start up anxiety and agitation going on Seroquel? I am hoping it will can down but there are some times when I feel particularly anxious which sounds paradoxical.

Those doses knocked me on my butt immediately so I am surprised you don't feel anything. I think consensus might say 6 weeks to judge response so it is early still. I've seen people report great response from seroquel augmentation but not very often. Many people use it as a sleep aid. If you liked zyprexa I sort of doubt seroquel can live up to that. Would like to be wrong though. :-)

Agitation with Seroquel is pretty common. Upping the dose can help.

When I was hospitalized last year, they put me on 100 mg of seroquel and gave it only a couple of days to have an effect (it didn't, except making me twitchy and sleepy). I think if you give it a week, that's enough.

I think it would be more enlightening to ask this question of a doctor who uses Seroquel regularly in the role of antidepressant. Seroquel shares some properties with Zyprexa, but it has at least one mechanism that Zyprexa does not. The major metabolite of Seroquel (norquetiapine) acts like an antidepressant in that it is a norepinephrine (NE) reuptake inhibitor. As is true of other NE antidepressants, there might be a lag-time before it begins to work. It might be appropriate to wait 3 - 4 weeks.

If you find Seroquel tolerable, I would be patient and wait a few weeks unless an experienced doctor tells you otherwise.

Thanks for your input. Funnily enough last night was the first solid nights sleep since I have been on seroquel as it has not had the sedative effect I have heard so much about. Zyprexa had much more of an effect. I came off Zyprexa as it blunted my emotions and so far Seroquel has seemed to amplify them which isn't such a bad thing. The agitation as worn off today thankfully today so I am keeping my fingers crossed it stays like this. My sister is on Seroquel only and it has been so helpful for her so my doctor thought it might be an idea to try it to see if it helps as we are genetically somewhat similar in theory.
