I need some input. I may see another doctor BUT

Posted by rjlockhart04-08 on October 10, 2011, at 0:11:22

I have no money to go see this doctor but when I get a job maybe I can. Do you think they will accept me if I don't have any money. I have 200 dollers in the bank. Flat out and this is going to go to other expenses that I have to pay. Someone told me to go to this doctor if your having trouble with ADD/ADHD. Now, I am not drug seeking which many of you proably are already thinking that's my plan. I've had repeated failures to alternative meds and I am left to low options. There are MAOI's like Parnate I could try. What should I do?? My mother doesnt know anything about this plan. If she did she would take the car away and not let me have contact with other people associated with the plan. It's a prison and im really ready to get on my own. Now, I need to hear what you think of this. I am not looking for stimulants. I'm looking for a doctor that will understand I just "cannot" function well at a job without the help of psychostimulants. And you know im not going to ask him about certain ones, you maybe MAOIs are an option.

Tell me what you think I should do.

How does your current doctor get paid? On your parents insurance, or does your mother pay cash?

See if this new doctor can bill your parents insurance, sure, they might find out, but by then you'll have seen him and it will be too late.

Does your mother come into the doctors consulting room with you, or do you have some privacy with the doctor? If you do, tell him/her that you feel you need a second opinion from this doctor, and remind them that what you have said is in confidence, not to be shared with your mother

also, do you have a GP, a family doctor who you trust, someone who you'd go to if you had a sore throat or bronchitis or whatever? You could ask that doctor for a referal to someone else about your ADHD, and that should be covered by your insurance (or your parents insurance)

You might just have to find a way to get your hads on your parents insurance card on the day of the appointment.

I'm not 100% certain how it works in the US, but I am assuming that your parents would have a card, like a visa card, for their insurance.

Can any Americans jump in and tell RJ what insurance details he'd need to get this doctor paid by his insurance?

All he needs is the insurance card, a copy of it, or the information on it. When you make an appointment, they will likely want that information ahead of time so they can verify your coverage.

What you need to know, though, is that when the claim is processed, your parents will get a copy of the EOB (Explanation of Benefits), which will show them (among other things) your name as the patient, the date of the visit, and the doctor's name.

Some times, actualy a lot of times, you need prior aproval to see a shrink, you get it by calling your insurance company. They then aprove you for so many visits with a mental health doctor. Also if you have a primary care physician, you will need a referal from your family doctor. Thats only if your insurance is an HMO policy, it will say that on your insurance card. If its not an HMO it will say PPO.

PPO's also need prior approval, or at least mine does.

I also would point out that, were I your parent, I wouldn't at all mind if you used an insurance card that I had given you without checking with me first. But if you went through my purse for my insurance card without my knowledge, I'd likely feel more than a bit distrusting. I don't know how your mother would react.

Typically if his mother has the card, it doesn't matter (unless he is conserved which he has never mention). He can go to Cigna's website or call their 1-800 number to get a temporary card printed from their website. Almost all insurance companies allow this.

RJ: PLEASE do this. You don't need to understand how the complex private insurance systems work in the US to call Cigna. Call them with your Social Security Number and explain you need a temporary card. They will point you to somewhere on their website where you can print one.

Ask if you can have a directory of psychiatrists who take your insurance, or if it's available on their website. Also ask if you need a referral from your GP or if you can just call down the list of psychiatrists taking your insurance. Ask what the "copay" is - this is the small amount of cash you'll need to pay at the doctor's office. Usually anywhere from $0-50 depending on your policy.

Does your Mom pay something when you go to see the bitch doctor?

Do you understand? If not I'd be happy to clarify . I've been trying to get you to do this for a long time, man. If you can see a doctor and meet your copay (if you have one), and Mom doesn't follow you everywhere you go, why not?

Call Cigna. Go to their website to get the 800 number. You can do this, right?
