ANY Antidepressants that don't cause fatigue?

Posted by FrustratedMama on October 9, 2011, at 10:28:36

Ok,
Looking for some responses here.....are there any antidepressants that will not cause me to be a complete slug, gain weight, and become a flat emotionless person?

In the actual antidepressant class itself, you're basically looking at Wellbutrin, Marplan, or Parnate. Nardil's 2/3 of the way there, but if you're worried about weight gain, I'd try something else first.

Also NE uptake inhibitors (Strattera, although the labelling is for ADHD), reboxetine, or TCA such as desipramine. The side effects of the TCAs are unsavory.

Off-label, you have dopamine agonists (pramipexole, ropinirole) and of course the psychostimulants.

There are others, but I don't know what country you're in or more about your condition.

I've not gained weight on any but then do take low doses but even 60mg of cymbalta and 250mg of luvox no weight gain. Phillipa

Anxiety, ADHD, and depression....and/or bipolar II diagnosis....depends on pdoc.

Symptoms: hypersensitivity to sound and difficulty tolerating stresses (even little stresses) lack of motivation, tired, over-eating, difficulty managing daily tasks, and internal drive that wont shut off (feels like caffeine overloaded).

Current meds:
trileptal 300mg 2x day
klonopin .5 mg 2x/day
effexor xr 75 mg 2x/day
ambien 10 mg PM only

fatigue hits late afternoon really badly from 3-7 PM. coffee does not help or hurt....strange but true.....

looking for a med that wont cause weight gain and will help revive my drive to be human again :(

Hi Phillipa,
I loved cymbalta for the effects on pain and anxiety but the weight gain (30 pounds on my small stature) has limited my tolerance to it....and it pooped out on me :(. like several other meds.....all help seems temporary at best.

Have you tried increasing the effexor? 150mg is a low dose. Higher doses will give you the added norepenephrine boost. I can't drop lower than 300mg or I'll be in the same boat as you.

My meds:
Lamictal 200mg
Effexor 300mg
klonopin as needed.

zoloft, prozac and wellbutrin are the ones that come to mind.
I have chronic fatigue and sometimes SSRIs can set off an episode. When I was on celexa for awhile my muscles would tire very quickly. Raising my arm was exhausting.

I second Chairman_MAO's suggestions. Sometimes a success is when you feel normal (able to work, live and love) in a new way. High dose parnate (150mg/day) got me through college. Good Luck!

I've had no fatigue from parnate. None from lexapro either.

Lamictal caused too many side effects for me but did work.... I am nervous to try maoi just because of the two week withdrawal I would Need to rid of ssri. Upping the dose is a possibility- and/0r switching to wellbutrin and Prozac or zoloft. Never tried remeron but may consider it at high dose - to avoid any more weight gain - went up from a size 4 / a size 12 in 6 months! And I am short . Anyway- thanks all for advice- mainly tired of being fat tired and lazy but without the meds I am edged up and raging so I guess this is better
