This Memantine/stimulant tolerance thing

Posted by Zonked on September 11, 2011, at 16:01:30

On another forum, people seem to be using Memantine to remedy tolerance to stimulants. I often neglect to mention my ADD because depression feels so much worse... the only reason I don't add Dexedrine to my regimen is that I become tolerant to a given dose within two to three weeks. Is there academic literature that supports use of Memantine for this purpose? I can't take Strattera because norandrenergic meds make me bonkers with anxiety. I also wanted to know if anyone has successfully managed ADD inattentive without meds since I may have no choice. ADD has been a lifelong problem for me, depression only in adulthood. I miss the relief Dex provides, but do not miss it feeling like a water pill within weeks. Thx. Z

I take 3-5 consecuative days off concerta a month and tolerance isn't a problem for me. My doc recommends this to me.

Could you try taking dexamphetamine during weekdays, with weekends off, to try and slow down tolorance?

Do you believe these people? Have you followed any of them to see if the therapeutic activity remains intact over time? How many of these people ultimately abandoned memantine and moved on to other strategies?

After more than ten years, I have not seen a successful augmentation of amphetamine with memantine. Nor have I seen any scientific investigations to study the validity of such a phenomenon.

Where memantine has garnered scientific support is in its ability augment the ant-nociceptive properties of opioids by preventing tolerance.

As for what I have seen so far regarding memantine and the prevention of tolerance:

Opioids: Yes
Stimulants: No

Scott, excellent questions to which I hope to have answers in a bit. I don't often post to the forum I was talking about, because my phone browser can't handle the site. I get my regular Internet back today, so I will ask some people in the absence of proof what made them try such a combination and anecdotally if it has prevented tolerance over time. BTW, two things: one, Viibryd is getting good reviews over at askapatient.com, although sample size is low. Two: You've mentioned in the past you had Medicare Part D. If you receive "extra help" from the SSA for your drug copays and/or are dual eligible for Medicaid, you can switch Medicare Part D plans at any time without penalty. Put in your drug list at Medicare.gov and see which plans have Viibryd on their formulary. I am having to make a switch myself due to needing coverage for testosterone. I wish you good luck, you deserve some lasting, real relief.

Thanks for the info and your encouraging words. I really do appreciate them.

Memantine is a rather benign drug. I guess you will have to try it for yourself to arrive at an answer to your question. I recommend titrating it using the starter pack.

Good luck.
