Hi,
Has anyone tired Flupentixol. I have been persribed this to augment Sertraline/Zoloft, I am a bit nervous about taking it because there is very little information on this drug and it is an older anti-psychotic. Any information would be really apprecited.

I'm afraid that I haven't tried it. Are you taking it as a low dose to treat depression? If so, you could consider low-dose of lithium if you're not comfortable with the flupentixol. Low dose lithium has been show to boost the effect of anti-depressants.
One benefit of lithium over low dose antipsychotics is that lithium serum levels are monitored by your prescribing doctor via blood tests. There's no real way of testing antipsychotics which can lead to tardive dyskinesia.

Low-dose flupentixol isn't associated with the same level of EPS and TD that full-dose flupentixol (or any higher dose neuroleptic) is. That said, the risk is not zero, and if you're looking at long-term treatment with the neuroleptic, the risk becomes higher as your total neuroleptic dose increases. Low-dose lithium sounds like a reasonable alternative. You could also go ahead and try the flupentixol and take precautionary measures to reduce your TD risk, such as taking vitamin E+C, melatonin, B6, etc. and avoiding drug abuse and heavy smoking.

Hi,
I am taking it with Sertraline, so that I can hopefully reduce Sertraline from 150mg's to 100mg's because the side effects are much lower on 100mgs. I am taking it for OCD. What is EPS?I thought Lithium was more for bipolar?

EPS is Extra Pyramidal Symptoms. It means things like twitches, muscle jerks, dystonia, etc. that usually result from neuroleptic drugs. If you are using a higher dose antipsychotic, these are somewhat common; low doses usually don't produce such reactions.
Lithium has a number of uses in psychiatry, one of which is pumping up antidepressants. I would think that for OCD you'd be better off an antipsychotic, but I'm not a doctor.

Hi,
I'm on a low dose flupentixol. I take 0,5 mg in the morning and 0,5 mg in the afternoon. This drug is good for anxiety. The side effects are negligent.

Thanks for your feedback. It was the tardiative dyskinesia that I was most worried about, sounds pretty scary. But as you say hopefully you won't get that at such a low dose.
I guess it probably would be long term treatment I would be on it for. Peter have you been on it for a long time?

I have been on flupentixol for two years. I'm not afraid of tardive dyskinesia, since 1 mg of this drug is a very low dose.

Thanks. I started it a few days ago and it seems fine. Hopefully I can reduce my dose of sertraline to 100mg's.
