Can someone explain???

Posted by Sheilac on July 13, 2011, at 7:09:48

Ok - I know we have a lot of very smart people here and I was hoping someone could explain something to me.

In the past (as we all know) I've taken Geodon. At first it was a GREAT antidepressant, but then it turned into hypomania then mania.

Why would an anti-psychotic that is supposed to stop mania bring it on?

If you're not mania BEFORE taking an anti-psychotic, WHY would it MAKE you manic?

Are there chemicals in the brain it over stimulates?

Thanks for any answers!

well i think there are probably similarities to the increase of mood and energy of 'getting out of depression' and mania, as well as similarities to the 'mood dysregulation' of mania and depression. there are a lot of changes and some of them overlap, and some don't.

and yeah it hits several receptors so it can do various things. 5ht1a, nert, sert, 5ht2 all could be antidepressant, and i think all could be pro-manic (based on 'antidepressants' hitting those can increases manic risk)

i think the consensus is for antimania, the higher dose where it hits dopamine receptors is needed. or take a low dose with lithium or something.

So I could stick with 40mg Geodon at night along with 1mg Klonopin and sleep good, but take low dose lithium during day? How low lithium? 150mg? Combined with a little more Klonopin? 300mg without klonopin?

I am not sure that is enough lithium, though if you have personal experience with it, i would go with your experience.

It makes me lose my hair. So going up to a decent dose would make me bald! I hate that.

"Traditional" mood stabilizers - Lithium (300mg - 600mg) and Depakote (125mg - 500mg) are ok in small doses, but getting towards "theraputic dose" make me very depressed (not manic though - just suicidal!)

Trileptal & Tegretol gave terrible night sweats (like menopause in overdrive!)

Abilify - ok, made me very hungry and I started gaining weight.

Risperdal (hungry) & Abilify made me swell up as well.

Seroquel was awesome for sleep and some slight depression, but made me a very mean, angry person in the morning. Not worth the anger and blow ups.

Wellbutrin, which is "supposed to be the least likely to make you manic" makes me super manic crazy!

SSRIs eventually make me manic.

I think I do best with a combo of low doses of meds.

I can take up to 3mg of Klonopin a day and do fine, but I have to have something else with it for depression.

Geodon does take away the irritability and depression and keeps my anger in check. But, 20mg of Geodon during the day puts me to sleep.

Maybe 40mg of Geodon at dinner with 1mg of Klonopin. (I feel tired in the morning with even 40mg) 5mg Adderall xr with breakfast and 1mg of Klonopin around lunch to calm me and keep me focused?

On Geodon 60mg or even 80mg I still feel tired in the morning and what's the sense in taking more Adderall to combat the fatigue?

I seem to be able to be effected by small doses and sometimes get the opposite effect from meds. Something about the way my body metabolizes these meds.

I told my doc that Geodon was the best antidepressant I had ever taken (I know it is an anti-psychotic), but he kept saying it is not an antidepressant (I know this, but it works for my depression great).

it sounds like a low dose of valproate might be good?
