Has anyone tried Zofran for anxiety/depression?

Posted by mogger on May 16, 2011, at 15:35:41

Just wondering if anyone has tried it? Seems similar to buspar but with less side effects.

As far as I'm aware it doesn't have any anxiolytic properties. As you probably know it's a med given for nausea.

I've been on Buspar for a while now and while it hasn't been the most effective drug for me, it seems to have very few side effects.

was on it for a while but 1)VERY f-ing expensive, at first it was like $75 for about 6 tabs. and i have pretty good insurance..
then i switched to liquid (via I.V.) and still Very expensive and i noticed a slight calming effect only then.
but keep in mind this was for severe vomiting.
i cant say that it would be worth it.

i think because its deamed as an aid to chemotherapy med that they figure most ins. would cover it.
because i was using it differently i suppose? who knows i'll never forget that. i about freaked out and i thought even if it works i cant afford them.
they ended up not working, went to iv zofran and it still didnt help.
finally they created a different concoction that did work.
anyway. that crazy expense stuck in my mind.

I was just given some Zofran for nausea following a bad viral infection that left me severely dehydrated. I got it in an IV, but then I filled a prescription for some more. I haven't had to use it, but I want to have it on hand.

It worked great for the nausea along with some sort of percocet type thing. I did not sleep well in the bed in the quiet section of the ED, and I felt agitated and antsy with some twitchiness. I'm now wondering whether this is a side-effect of the zofran. I had a bad twitching problem on Prozac after a few years, and since therapy did more for that depression, I just went off of it. Zoloft never caused me that problem.

The 5-HT3 receptor is mentioned as being important in depression and anxiety, but I couldn't find any articles describing it's use in anxiety. I tried it for several weeks to see if it would help my Fibromyalgia symptoms, but did not notice any anti anxiety effects. Of course, dose and duration may not have been optimized.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21342788
Abstract
5-Hydroxytryptamine type 3 (5-HT(3)) receptors are ligand-gated ion channels that play important roles in depression, anxiety, substance abuse, emesis, inflammatory pain, spinal nociception, gastrointestinal function, and cardiovascular reflexes. Probably the most studied modulators of 5-HT(3) receptors are the high affinity competitive 'setron' antagonists typified by ondansetron. However, there exists a broad range of compounds that modulate the 5-HT(3) receptor, not through the orthosteric site but by binding to allosteric sites. Most notable are therapeutic compounds ascribed to certain targets but that allosterically modulate 5-HT(3) receptors at clinically relevant concentrations.

I've tried it. Ondansetron (generic name) helped a little with anxiety. I took doses of 1-2mg every three hours. As the effects wore off, I used to experience a dopamine rebound (hyperactivity).
