Chloral Hydrate Question-Please help!

Posted by G-man885858 on March 25, 2011, at 2:02:27

Hi,

My psychiatrist prescribed me chloral hydrate a few months ago for severe insomnia. He is fully aware that I'm taking it for a few months now.

My question is: Can Chloral Hydrate possibly induce suicidal thoughts if it's taken this long? Is this a dangerous drug that I must worry about?

Thanks!

Personally I took it for a number of years combined with benzos. It definitely works for sleep. I didn't have any negative effects from it. And at one time was up to 20cc. I later stopped it entirely. Wasn't bad. Very old med. Phillipa

Phillipa, how does it compare to Benzos, when used as a sleep aid? Is it more effective? Does it feel different?

Psychbot
PS - G-Man, if I had to guess, I'd say that any med that agonizes Gaba-A receptors might potentially cause depression. But don't take my word for it. Some of these meds seem to do that, and some don't.

Thanks Philippa and Psychobot!

However, I'm also afraid that these thoughts may be triggered by my cigarette smoking. I've read studies linking smoking to panic attacks.

I would do anything to quit smoking!

Chloral hydrate loses its effect after 2 weeks of regular use, where as benzodiazepines keep working for 6 months plus, AND chlorak or barbiturates are no more effective than benzodiazepines such as temazepam or flurazepam in appropriate doses (about 30g of either of these)

Thus, benzos are better choices, as well as being virtualy impossible to kill your self with them.

Philippa,

Is 5 cc equivalent to one teaspoon or 2 teaspoons?

So you took 5 cc for a few years and it never failed you? That's awesome!

5cc is usually considered a teaspoon. But a med cup with cc's printed on it is the best. Yes it worked like a charm for a long time insomniac. Phillipa

I think chloral should only be considered where benzodiazepines (temazepam, flurazepam, nitrazepam) and the "Z druhs" like zoldipem have failed

I've tried Temazepam, and it didn't work. I also tried all the "Z" drugs. I have not tried the other 2 benzo-type drugs that you listed because I think that doctors are too "Phobic" of prescribing these types of strong benzos.

Doctors are very phobic of prescribing drugs that actually work. Instead, they prescribe Prozac, paxil, etc. because they're still patented and the big pharma companies make more money that way.

And chloral hydrate is ancient and very inexpensive. Worth a try. Phillipa
