Topamax As An Adjunct To An AD

Posted by bulldog2 on September 28, 2010, at 15:34:16

It seems that posts on topamax come and go. One of the few meds that does not cause weight gain. Apparently there is finally a study that shows it has properties as an add on to a bipolar med for mood stabilization.

It seems to work strongly on gaba and yet is activating. I tried it for a few days and found it to strong and discontinued it. Is there any evidence that topamax is a good adjunct to bump ad properties of another med? Would be nice to have a mood stabilizer that doesn't make you fat and feel flat.

I was given topamax to actually lose weight. It reacts horribly with Nardil (for me, caused horrible gas), but on it's own, it curbs my appetite, and who knows what else, but 100-200 mg a day, and I've lost 15 or so pounds after stopping Nardil, in only a few weeks, which wouldn't allow me to shed a single pound, no matter what diet (exercise was impossible on Nardil due to the sweating side-effect), and it didn't matter, because if I did, I still wouldn't shed an ounce).

But, Topamax did 0, nada, nothing for my mood, what-so-ever. I have severe-depression now, starting with bipolar disorder, many years ago.

I highly recommend it for weight loss... it worked for me when everything else failed. I used it 3 times to lose weigh I gained from 3 different drugs. Seroquel, Fanapt?, and something else.. forgot the time...

Unforunately I need something to add to wellbutrin for depression. The wellbutrin by itself is not doing much. Tried lithium as an add on and really don't like it.

I found it was really good even at a small dose, for stopping SSRI induced carb cravings.
I tried going up to a dose of 100mg but I had anxiety and cycling at 50 that was just too much to take.

I find the anxiety to much to tolerate. It a gaba med to!

right, I had the anxiety too. I wasnt able to get much higher than 50mg without problems.
I fell back to 12.5mg and took that for a few months. Did pretty well with cravings despite keeping the celexa at the same level.

I tried Topomax as a mood stabilizer when it first came out, I think I took 100mg for about 10 months. It didn't do anything for me as a MS, but I lost 40# of med weight without even trying- it was great!

However, I had to go off it because I began to get terrible cognitive dysfunction. By the time I stopped, I could barely put a sentence together in the right order. Bummer.

A few years later I tried it again for weight loss, but the cognitive problems came back immediately even though they took several months to develop first time around.

Have other people had this problem with Top?

Topomax is sometimes called dopomax because of the cognitive problems it causes. A lot of people have that side effect
