ADD ADHD meds question...

Posted by SheilaC on January 24, 2010, at 16:53:57

I did a trial of Vyvanse for ADD - which worked great, but lasted too long in my system and I just couldn't sleep.

No my doc switched me to Adderall IR 5mg. It's ok. Has a few good side effects. But I notice that I am irritable. I don't know if it is because the quick up and down effect or what. I am wondering if I should switch to Adderall XR?

Extended release versions tend to last too long in my body (which is why I think Vyvanse never seemed to wear off). Is there another med that will only last around 6 - 8 hours? Or are they just IR or 12 hour meds?

I've heard irritability is common with Adderall.

There used to be a medication called "Cylert" which was about half the potency of Ritilin or close to it and it lasted 12 hour's, it was withdrawn because of liver toxity [people had problems with liver]

Dexedrine Spansules are good. It's the same thing as Vyvanse but it work more "direct" while Vyvanse tends to work slow and distrubite d-amphetamine slowly by the l-lysine attached to it.

Adderall does cause a little bit more irrtibility because of the levoamphetamine is more norephinrine stimulation

Hi Shelia,

Dex has, I think, few side-effects, like vayvannase. Did you try lowest dose? My experience w/dex spansuales was decreasingly efficacy until I reached a plateai--which means it's still working, though not as intensely. Maybe vayvaanse would be similar. However, my symptoms differ greatly from yours.

My only experience is that concerta is the only sustainable choice if you want mood raise long-term.

Dexedrine was 'goofy', grandiose and saddening.

What dose of concerta you on west?

How long have you sustained long term benefits?

I've taken 27 or 36mg since november.

During that period I have experienced some problems with agitation and tachycardia, particularly at the higher dose, but consistently exeprienced brighter mood, improved memory and overall executive functioning.

My hunch is that either one or both of the antidepressants I take in conjunction with concerta are producing this sustainable mood lift. I say this because the immediate dose contained in the coating rarely produces any meaningful shift in mood first thing, whereas an hour or two after taking a pill of effexor (75mg) and cipralex (10mg), I get this calm, solid, raise in mood throughout the day.

Naps in the day can be annoying though, with adrenaline spikes when i think of anything i have to do, or is worrying me. But this is such a minor point that it's hardly worth mentioning.

In contrast to dexedrine, there are no appreciable come-downs or unpleasant sad or negative thoughts and I generally feel less like i'm on a 'reccy' and more on something with a proper medical application.
